So with another earth like planet discovered by the solar watching bovins I

was thinking to myself what really is the point to getting all excited ?

Even if it is an identical style planet to ours and there's is some sort of

sophisticated life forms on it what can we really do ?

Not much I'm guessing; even if we pointed the most powerful form of radio or

other communication device towards it would it not take a few thousand years

or more to get there, then the time it takes back again for them to respond !

So for the Bovins out there how long you think it would take to send a message

and what would you actually say ?

Mind they have no understanding of our language !

From what I understand, once we get a handle on anti-matter and the aforementioned higgs boson, then pretty much most of the universe is a possible fuel supply, that weighs... nothing! That said, it seems highly unlikely that we are just on the edge of the big break through, but maybe one day that will come.

Regardinging the acceleration point though - don't you need gravity to experience G-force? Surely in space you would be completely unaware of any acceleration, physically at least?

What we really need is to fire someone into a black hole and see what happens.. Where's Zedzilla when you need him?? :tt2:

My understanding is the same, once the higgs boson is found/discovered, it should open the door to a whole new world of scientific discovery and possibilities.

Yes you would need gravity to experience G-force, the point is, if you're on a space ship, you have artificial gravity, getting that artificial gravity to still work properly at that kind of speed is a complex equation. You notice how space ships of the now, don't use artificial gravity when moving, only when stationary, or drifting through space? The artificial gravity we use currently, requires things to move, you can't generate it any other way, something moving, creates momentum, etc. etc. you get the point.

I think what they're doing with the black hole machine at the moment, is likely to play a big part in the higgs boson discovery. Obviously everything we say in here as amateur scientists/sci fi fans, is pretty irrelevant and one of us will no doubt be proven right at some point in the future, but as you say, we may never see it to gloat about it :(

yep, and it works both ways though, there were 9 planets at the turn of the century now there is only 8

to be fair there are still 9 celestial bodies - just one has been declassified from being a planet - its not like its dissapeared!!

the Mayans knew the world was round and that it rotated around the sun, then the Europeans called it flat and that it had edges, now we know its round again.

yup - & like I said, its not going to change now!!

Just because light travels that fast, doesnt mean there isn't something else in the universe that can travel faster, we just might not have the technology to detect it, only thing it would do is prove that something can travel faster than light.

to be fair, were not discussing if ther are particles that travel faster than the speed of light as they already suspect there are tachyon particles that do this - what I was reffering to was accellerating a mass to light speed - energy will still be required for this which then adds more mass - we will still be squished when trying to accellerate to this speed with any real meaning!

gravity is still a very much unknown factor as well, strong enough to pull two galaxies together, yet weak enough to allow you to jump.

yup - it exhibits odd behavours at time & agree a lot is still not understood - like how it effects light or even time!

as for water boiling at 100c, well depends what pressure its under. each planet no doubt has its own pressure, so would depend on what planet your on at the time you make the assumption.

which is why I stated atmospheric pressure & assumed most people would take that to mean 1 bar!! :tt2:

Artificial gravity? What is this? I thought it was just something invented for star trek, just so they didn't have everyone floating around on set all the time?

You do realise star trek is fiction don't you?

Artificial gravity is definitely real. I should probably point out I used to work with a lovely American lady who used to work for NASA designing Lunar bases before she moved to NZ with her husband, who is the guy that wrote "The Perl Cookbook" lol

One of Jenines articles - Article on Luna Base Development

Again - imagine the power supply needed to even consider having more gravitational effect than a star LOL!!

What about antimatter? It's being artificially produced aws. I guess that's on star trek too.

I think for us to travel at great speeds we have to think outside the box infact we have to be outside our bodies and travel with just our soul. A bit like dreaming we can be anywere but its not real but if we could make our souls travel then we will go places:angel: Can you see what I mean or do you think Iam mad:biggrin:

You're talking about Avatar :D

You're talking about Avatar :D

is that less likely or more likely than Star Trek technology?!?!

They're all quite likely, as they're all sound scientific theories. Well most are at least. Essentially science fiction is mostly science, that is only at the theory stage with some theatrical embelishments. Almost every sci fi film/series since the 80s has had scientific advisors on hand who work/have worked for NASA and various other respected scientific institutes.

I wouldnt even be worrying about it. its a pointless us trying to understand it

With regards to the 1st question

Even if it is an identical style planet to ours and there's is some sort of

!

I would fire a couple of nukes at them :lol:

Imaging the sling shot you would get from a black hole if you didn't get sucked in.

And people say driving simulator games don't have a purpose.

I'd be keen to give that a crack...

hmmm no retrys though lol

I wouldnt even be worrying about it. its a pointless us trying to understand it

Yeah doom both our races why don't you.

Yeah doom both our races why don't you.

Yeah im not worring im not going to be here :lol:

Good to know that you want to nuke em on the first encounter!

Have you seen what happens in Independance Day?! Will Smith isnt always going to be around to protect us!! :2guns::alien:

best is what happens at the end of men in black when the aliens are playing marbles with our universe :d

werd!
