So with another earth like planet discovered by the solar watching bovins I

was thinking to myself what really is the point to getting all excited ?

Even if it is an identical style planet to ours and there's is some sort of

sophisticated life forms on it what can we really do ?

Not much I'm guessing; even if we pointed the most powerful form of radio or

other communication device towards it would it not take a few thousand years

or more to get there, then the time it takes back again for them to respond !

So for the Bovins out there how long you think it would take to send a message

and what would you actually say ?

Mind they have no understanding of our language !

Give the Nigerians a couple of weeks and they'll be emailing them about a dead relative

Even if it does take 600 years for the light to get to us I'm sure the planet will still be there, unless it's got swallowed up by one of those black hole thingies !

So on the theory that the picture we are seeing is 600 years old and we travel now faster than light to that planet and look back and wave, would we see ourselves in the picture say in another 600 years or so?

allegedly yes, but to see yourself in your own life time would require travelling something like 60 times the speed of light, which is impossible, unless you're talking TARDIS time travel of course, in which case anything's possible. The likelyhood is the planet is still there, but if it's exactly like ours, oxygen, nitrogen, etc. with an orbiting sun, it's entirely possible that the sun has already gone supa nova (As suns do and as ours will do eventually) and we just haven't seen it yet. So even if we devised a way to GET there within 50 years, we'd still have no way of knowing whether it was still there, without going there, because light only travels as fast as light travels. :D

A light year actually measures distance not time.light speed is186,000 miles a second or 700,000,000 miles per hour, and its pretty obvious the numbers get huge(imagine the distance light would travel in a day, week etc) so the light year was thought up to express the distance that light would travel in that time frame. To actually travel 600 lightyears would take millions of years with conventional technology.

Yup, that was my point :D If you're travelling faster than the speed of light (i.e. not using conventional tech) then you'd get there in just under 600 years. As you say, a light year is the distance light can travel within a year. To be perfectly honest, until they perfect cryo-stasis, it's all irrelevant, as for one thing, the human body couldn't stand the G-Forces it'd be subjected to. There are theories surrounding artificial gravitational fields that could move as the ship does to make sure you didn't feel the jolt, but it's all sci fi atm.

Surely its impossible to travel faster than lightspeed, as it is one of the universal constants?.and the amount of energy required to accelerate to anywhere near lightspeed would make it impossible, even with an ion engine.

i was watchin something about this on discovery the other day they think of you could harness something called 'dark flow' which btw only exists in a maths equasion then u could theoreticly move a lot faster than light closer to teleportation than moving as we know it

I would say that the people in this new planet are watching us and have traveled to our planet and this is known by a few people in the USA who are drip feeding us scraps of information on it.:alien: We are not alone!

really? an alien conspiricy theory in america?? no way i refuse to believe it!!! lol

It is currently impossible with todays tech, but....

It's likely not impossible, just currently beyond our understanding !

Exacery!

You might not be far wrong there Gary!

But a stagate is teleportation too....? If you're transported, YOUR molecules are broken down and YOUR molecules are re-constructed :D

funny thing is, do a search for why we can not go faster than light and no one seems to have a definitive answer, light is a wave form, we have many forms of light, we only see a small % of that.

I wouldn't say nothing can travel faster than light, id just say we haven't got the equipment to detect it yet. my hypothesis is that the closer you get to the speed of light, the less your going to see until a large ball of rock or gas stops you dead in your tracks.

i just don't see how nothing can go faster than light, it would still be a physical form even at that speed. you just couldn't see it until its gone past :) just like when i fart. i dont see it until its happened, then its

Well Yes and No !

I was thinking a futuristic transporter will if it could be digital in some way, and when moving digital objects from point a to point b it's actually just a copy !

Wormholes in theory are or could be a natural phenomena and no one really knows how they would work as its all theory anyways!

In terms of the stargates then Yes it would be a copy too likely.

with teleportation devices, its no wonder the star ship enterprise doesnt have toilets.....
