Would I be right in thinking that to get rid of the aircon I can simply remove the aircon compressor and belt and the associated pipework, and leave everything behind the dash in place........or is there more to it than that?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

I just removed the aircon fuse....

I want to remove the compressor etc to reduce a bit of weight and the load on the engine.removed the compressor on my v6 calibra and made a noticeable difference as the engine didnt have to drive the compressor.

Just turn the AC off, then the engine doesn't have to drive the compressor. I don't understand at all why people remove the AC from a grand tourer like we have.

Because not everyone uses it as a grand tourer including me. Mine will be getting ripped out as well as a lot of other stuff. Everyone is different.

My AC never worked, so although the pump is still in my engine bay for the now, the belt is disconnected, the radiator and condenser are pulled out and as we had the dash out the other week, the air con matrix was removed, the actual core removed from it's plastic box and the plastic box put back in to aid airflow of the heaters etc. When the rebuild engine goes in there, it'll have all the air con piping pulled out as well and no air con pump in the bay.

So you'll be sweating your tits off in the summer and constantly battling misty windows in the winter, nice ;)

The misty windows are sorted out by the fans quite nicely, provided the heater matrix is working, which mine now is :D Plus it's garaged and only a 2nd car now, so misty windows should really be a thing of the past, not like I'm going to go shopping in it when we have a grand espace for all that stuff :D And in the summer I just wear a T-Shirt and take the lids off, again, it's a 2nd car now, so it's purely for fun and when it suits the occassion :D

Targa top and windows down in the summer, and the heater is more than capable of removing misty windows with out the aircon, cars have been doing that for ages with out air con so why would it make a difference.

My red zed was fine over winter last year and the summer before that it was just fine, and it didn't have aircon.

come to think of it, of the 5 zeds ive owned, none have had the Aircon lol

Personally ive always found that misty windows on the inside on coupes is down to door and tailgate seals as much as anything.drove my calibra for 3 years with aircon removed, and if the windows did mist the heater soon cleared them..........and as for summer, thats what removeable targas are for surely?.i can see the advantages of aircon in hot climates but we usually only get a week or two of really hot weather.

tbh I would have KILLED for working aircon on the day of the "Super Car Sunday" car show, it was BLISTERING hot! We all drove back with targas off and we still all had sweaty backs when we got home, was ridiculously hot, I was starting to get convinced the world was ending and the sun was going supa nova that day! But I honestly can't remember another day this year where I cared about not having aircon.

sweaty back = leather seats lol use a throw over :)

but yeah, have to admit targas when sitting still is a bit fail  but its more than made up for by being able to remove them and looking cool in a 300zx while being hot and sticky.

he must be one sweaty chap

It was the HOTTEST day of the year, lol.

Back to the original question ;)

I cut the belt, removed the compressor and all pipework from the engine bay, left the gubbins behind the dash. Also removed the second (narrow) radiator thingy - someone is going to tell me that was a mistake no doubt, but I've had no related probs in the 4 years since I took it out. Heater and blower still work fine to clear misty windows. Much easier to work in the engine bay with that cr*p gone...I don't like aircon anyway, always smells musty and feel damp to me (yes, I did clean it).

I think mine steams up due to leaky roof = damp carpet, floor gets pretty warm on a long run.

Cheers

H

you can actually leave the smaller fan located next to the aircon rad in if you like as this is an emergency fan that kicks in at 104 degrees aparently.

Yeah I've left the fan in, but removed the rad, the piping around it, the condenser, the core of the AC Matrix in the dash and removed the belt, I still haven't actually removed the fuse ironically :D
