I just wanted to know what people think of these additives that are advertised to do wonders for your engine. I read on a 300 web site that redex/redline helped with start up smoking problems?????

i wouldent touch that stuff with a barge pole

the only additive you should put is octane boost lol

I use and have used injector cleaner for quite a while in all my cars. Saab T16S Aero, Supra Turbo, 300ZX TT(briefly) and now in my Merc.

I do alot of motorway mileage so I'm always filling my tank up on a regular basis. If you use it in line with the recommendations on the bottle it shouldn't cause a problem.

I've used the Redex one shot stuff, but now I mostly use Wynn's, I think it comes in a nice black bottle. But like I say, I only use fuel injector cleaner because we all know what happens if you get a fouled injector? Trouble time!

Upto you though, some people don't believe it actually does anything, I use it more as a preventitive measure.

Yup additives will kill your car in a hurry - I would not touch any system flush additives with a shitty stick.

Wynns Injector cleaner is fine if you are having injector related problems.

Octane booster ... its ok - but i would not rely on it to save my car from detonation - if you get a dodgy tank of petrol then use it. other wise i would not bother - Tune your car to run on UK RON fuel. and if you wanna make highspeed runs go with 50:50 Race fuel.

Those are just my opinons people will have different ones im sure. But its your engine decide what cause you want to run with it. all depends on how much money you have Vs how much you care for your engine - of course you Shoudln't Have to use any additives at all if you have the money / skill to replace / remove and clean things properly.

nico where can you get race fuel

I'm with Nico. Having the car tuned to 95 RON UK fuel will give you around a fractional decrease in power but it allows you to use Super Unleaded (97/98 RON) to give you a margin of safety for track days / high speed runs to Le Mans trying to keep up with a TVR / etc.
