targa drains........

have just spent a productive hour and a half removing half a ton of white silicon sealer( not a good look on a black car!!!) from under my drivers side targa, cleaned it all up and lubed the wind deflector thingy so its all nice and free and poured some penertrating oil down the drain hole (figured it would be better than water if hose was disconnected ;) ), and it came out the bottom as it should, just behind the front wheel.

did the same on the passenger side (no sealer this time), poured the penetrating oil down, but no sign of it underneath!.

i know the drivers side is a pain to do but what about the passenger side???, how easy is it to get to the end of the hose to re-attach it and is there much to remove to get to it???

move the passenger seat all the way, you can reach your arm up into the area where the targa drain comes down, it empties into the wing (dunno what nissan were thinking) the targa drain attaches to a L shaped pipe most likely its popped out of that. or its still connected and just dribbling into the wing.

All you need to know below:

Electrical problems and water ingress go hand in hand on any car and no less the zed especially with targa roofs.

Many owners have experience some level of water leak from the targa / door seals but in the vast majority of cases it is obvious as it shows up on the seats or your leg if your unlucky enough to be driving through big rain and it lets in.

So when we saw a zed with some odd electrical issues and a very wet passenger carpet the taga was an obvious suspect.

But when pulling the carpet back the area below the ecu was very dry.

So with everything initially looking ok we checked out the targa drain points

Now what your really want to see is a puddle of water appear on the floor just under the front sill area

But what we got was very different, , a very wet set of relay and loom connectors

We removed the A post trim and set about checking the drain tubing for any pin holes Pic.5,6,7,

With no issues higher up we took more panels out and eventually found the culprit here, the final stage sill drain pipe disconnected

Quite how this had come detached from the connector to the sill drain is a mystery, however athough a real neck and wrist breaker to get in the deed was done and tested, now all the targa drain water stays where its is supposed to OUTSIDE.

annoyingly i may have to do all that next weekend as i tested mine today and neither front ones drain onto the floor looks like a proper pain in the arse aswell

I put clips on all of mine to stop it from doing it again. it seems as if the rubber pipe shrinks with age so it may be tight to get it back in. thats why i used clips to secure it

I turned out a little brass cup thingy on my dad's lathe. It plugged in to the lower pipe and then the drain tube from the targa pushed into the top. Haven't had a problem with it since and it only took a couple of weeks for the feeling to return to my hand after fitting it....

so what, other than the ecu cover and the kick panel, do you have to take off to refit the end of the hose???
