Refurbishing the targas

Well, I began with the intention of just swapping the black rubber trim with those off the yellow Zed,... which has now turned into full refurb lol.

The paint on them was a little poor but showed no signs of rust coming through, but as I took off the rubber strips I could see signs of rust. So I kept dismantling to the point i thought, stuff it, the metal is coming right out and getting sorted.

Neither of them were leaky but when I got right down to it, I'm sure there will have been plenty of big holes in these things a few months down the line.

Close up of the not too bad rust hole below on the passenger one that I've already sanded down, but the driver side one is by far the worse of the two.

I'm glad I saw this. I don't want rusty gunky targas near my new shiny boot install!

I guess no one else has done this then? !

The most fun comes when putting this back together but I'm sure I'll manage.:hammer:

On both cars, they had been resprayed before.

On the yellow one they even painted over the edge of the top rubber trim, they both have bubbles of rust coming through the top. None of the yellow paint had been stripped off before that weird black gloss was plonked on top badly with runs so I didnt fancy stripping those. Finally, the edge rubbers were not as good

The grey one had also been sprayed over the top trim and the plastic edgings allowing water to get underneath some of the paint (this is not the cause of rust because the top surfaces are all fine). The paint came off really easy right down to the metal where it had been resprayed.

After losing my other car, I'm damn well going to make sure everything is mint on the grey one. I even polished the inside of the doors and there's no surface rust inside my steering wheel or metal under my dial surround lol.

Putting the targas back together. What is the best black gunk to use? Tiger seal is good but a nightmare to work with so any alternatives you can suggest?
