OK I know from previous experience the dip beam output on the headlights is pretty crap

But to be honest the ones on this Zed seem even worse than the ones on my previous Zed. To the point where the car is no fun at all to drive after dark! In fact on a few occassions I would have to say it is downright dangerous.

Half the problem seems to be the beam spends much of it's output lighting the bottom part of the light unit itself!

I'm in two minds to fit these Front fibreglass headlights that Zcentre have

However is there anything I can consider to get some decent amount of light out of the existing ones?

More powerful bulbs?

HID kit?

Stick a candle to each wing and forget about the lights?

I guess this has been discussed on here many times, I did try a forum search but there were too many hits for 'headlights'.

So whats the way forward.... does anyone use these zcentre fibreglass lights and are they much much better? Can I stick HID kits in those?

OK I had a look around

I take it I need two of these HID kit, as it would be a bit silly with super white dipped beam and yellow/white hi beam?

Looks like the 55W ones are not vastly more than the 35W ones.

What size bulbs are in the Z?

H1, H3, H4-1, H7, H7R, H8, H9, H10, H11, H13-1, D2C, D2R, D2S, HB3/9005, HB4/9006.

Come to think of it what are in the front fog lights?

No you don't use HIDs for hi beam mate, they're not designed for that as they take a bit to warm up which aint good for flashing folk...in fact have a search for the thread about some additional wiring which prevents you having a moment of darkness with hids fitted to dip beam (if you flash then the hids go off with standard setup and then when your hi beam finishes flashing you have a second or so of the hid warming up with you in the dark if you wire it up the way the normal instructions tell you to).

I'm sure its H3 your after for dip beam.

Ahh yeah just did a bit of reading about that, great thing the internet...

So I need the dip lights to stay on when using main beam

Yes mate, there is an easy way and a hard way.

1. Just have the hid dip beams stay on while flashing - easy

2. Have hid dip beams stay on if they were already on when you flashed, BUT don't have them fire up if flashing with dip beam off (during the day letting someone out of a junction for instance). This is the harder one as far as level of wiring required but it is healthier for your hids, they don't like firing up for short bursts like a flash.

Choice is yours but with hid kits being so cheap these days and the little night time use my zed sees, I'll be going for option one when I get round to ordering mine.

yeah option 1 is easy, just take the ground from one of the headlight connectors and ground it to the body. Use a decent size wire and inline fuse though as it pulls a fair bit of current through it. As said, no good for flashing your lights in the daytime when your lights are off, tbh though I only ever flash at night when they can't see me wave so it doesn't make any difference to me.

These are the cheapest ones I found - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310213954935?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I'm sure a former trader of hids (not these exact ones) posted this week to say that he's seen wiring loom problems caused by higher wattage sets and just to stick to 35w. The higher wattage gives more light but doesn't 'throw' it any further to light up more road.

Spend that bit extra and go for the HID4U kit imo, ebay ones are cheap and you get what you pay for.

NP I always tend to go for mid range rather than cheap - I've learned from experience that anything brought where the biggest consideration is price, tends to lead to some dissatisfaction

Anyway, had been looking at these guys, seem like pretty decent kit

but must say that ebay one seems very cheap in comparison. (awkwardly shufflles off to sidelines.... )
