This is just a link to a thread with some very nice pics of an R35 GTR which has been subject to a full paint correction and detail.

If you read it you'll see a major cause of the problem is the use of a car cover. It is one I share if the car is left outside as even if they are 'strapped' down they will rub against the paint work and any contaminents will gradually mark your paintwork.

This is my personal standpoint and not meant to upset anyone. Just worth thinking about imo.

:detective: I'm not convinced on this one. It's true that contaminates trapped between car and car-cover could cause scratching, but the swirl marks shown in the photos are more consistent with some r'tard using a dirty rotary cleaner/mop. Unless the car cover was covered in sand paper, I just don't buy it.

Anyway, the guy owns a GTR, no sympathy from me!! :tt2:

I agree, that level of swirling isn't from a cover alone but they can't be good for paintwork. I'm going to see the guy who did the correction in a few days, hope he's working on one then

Car covers outside in the wind will damage high points on the bodywork especialy. Not good on fresh paint. Car cover in a garage yes, outside -no!

We agree on something!! WOOHOO :tt2:

Car cover in a garage? Really? Dust cover, fair enough - don't think you need a car cover though? I bought a car cover because I haven't got a garage and don't want the frost and hail and sleet and snow melting into my leaky targas, making my carpet mouldy like last year. I'll tolerate a few micro-scratches until I can buy a house with a garage and get a proper respray!!

Car covers and wind are a terrible thing though - I found out the hard way. I still use a car cover, but I paid good money for a decent one instead of using the cheapo Argos one which marked all my arches.

No way did a car cover cause swirls over the whole body.

That's what washing it with a foam sponge does.

The black GTR's have incredibly soft paint.

I think its a question of balance. An uncovered car exposed to the elements against a car cover. Especially if the car is going to sit unused for some time. If you are going to use a car cover the car should be cleaned beforehand.

Not all sponges are bad. It's the cheap ones in DIY stores and petrol stations that are. Proper detailing sponges are fine. Two bucket method is a good way of avoiding swirling as well

Funny you mentioned the paint issue,I know a guy with an R35 and hes taking Nissan to court, its black and peppered with stone chips. He had the paint measured and he said its the thinest coating permissable, his words not mine, anyhows Nissan blew out complaint about getting it repainted under warranty so hes taking legal action !!
