I need a couple of tyres before I can mot a car. Car has no mot, tax or insurance. Would be too much a PITA to just takes the wheels down. am I ok just phoning the shop to make an appointment, does that cover me by law or is it just at the police discretion if I got stopped.

As long as you book it in to the MOT station, you can drive it there and back legally. You can't just book it in for tyres though, it must be booked in for MOT.

Even if it is booked in for a MOT, you cannot use a car on a public road without insurance on it, get the testing station with their trade plate insurance to drive it there and back for you :thumbup1:

Sorry, yes you would also need the car insured. (that'll teach me to read a post properly).....lol

Sorry was talking about driving to the tyre shop not the mot station. Probs best to just take the wheels there in another car lol

lol my brother in law is a police inspector, he thought it was ok. So maybe I should rephrase that too "down to officers intelligence" :laugh:

I'd be very caerfull here matey honestly, you get stopped and whoa, no tax, no mot, no insurance and my god bald tyres too, what do you think the policeman will say?

what if he says the car is being confiscated and crushed?

and maybe even points on your liscence and hefty fine

worse still, you have an accident thats not your fault, and the police are called,

yet you may get there and back with no trouble at all,

its a big risk to take imho, id try t take the wheels there if you could.

ye the answer is a definate NO.

If your MOT is out you can book it in for a test at an MOT station and you are allowed to drive it to and from the test centre only with no mot and tax. But if stopped you can still face prosecution for driving an unroadworthy vehicle should you be stopped and the police deem it dangerous, ie bald tyres.

 

You MUST have insurance to drive or even to leave a car parked on the public highway.

 

You also cant get someone else to drive it off their insurance, even if they have a 3rd party extension to drive other vehicles, as the small print will insist the vehicle holds other insurance. A registered motor trader may be able to drive it as their policy is comprehensive regardless of whether the vehicle has existing cover or not.

 

Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law.

 

If i were you id jack it up and take the wheels off!!
