got my bulbs for main beam but cant get to the old ones to change do i have to remove the complete light unit to do this job or is there another way of going about it any help please

It's super fiddly, and removing the whole light unit is no trivial job, so I'd do it with them in. I've done mine before I think (Was about a year ago when I first got the car) and need to do my passenger side one again.

think my hands are too big to get in too many wires and tubes is nothing on these cars staight foreward to do

Once the wiring connector is removed the bulb holder has two looped pronges underneath that need pressing together to release from the headlight, agree though they can be a real pain to get out.

ok Jeff thats very good of you i seem to be having a few dificulties lately will await your pics.

Just be relieved when the mrs's insurance comes through, so we can bring the Z down to you for timing belt & a few other bits that need to be done.

LOL.. i did mine when I took the lights out (which was nasty) but once you manage to do one in situ it will be a lot easier for the second one...

maybe pointy nose pliers... lol.. or wait for Jeffs guide (that might be the best way) :)

You are not the only one mate, my dump valves have been seated near the lights, not sure if thats standard. The only way I can see to get into a position to have a crack at the lights is to remove the dump valves..

 

I keep reminding myself its the joy of owning a zed...lol

I removed my BOV's/pipe when I fit my HID lights as it would of been practically impossible without doing so but it's not a problem.

Months later I had my lights out, again it is a fiddle but you can get so much done when you have them on a bench, test adjusters, clean, etc.

 

I was then going to use some cheap 100w bulbs in the main beam but one blew whilst testing so soon scrapped that idea (not required either) and put back in the reliable phillips 50watters as you dont want to be replacing them every two minutes when access is so poor :mad2:

There is quite a bit of info on this topic but most of it is burried within unrelated posts therefore a bit more difficult to find.

 

Here goes:

 

Side repeaters:

(1) Pull the orange indicator lens off the wing by pushing it towards the front of the car and then lifting off from the rear. Sometimes you need to use a small flat-blade screwdriver to push in the plastic retaining pin at the rear.

(2) Once off the wing, the bulb holder is connected by a wire to a round connector. Disconnect the connector.

(3) Assuming you've bought clear side repeaters which came with a square connector you'll now have to cut off the round connector on the car side and attach a terminal block to the wires. Cut the black square connector off the side repeater and connect the wires to the terminal block.

(4) To change the bulb inside the side repeater you need to twist the bulb holder until it pops out. You then pull the amber bulb out and replace it with another bulb (perhaps you've got a silvertec bulb). Reinsert the bulb holder and twist to lock.

(5) Offer the side repeater up to the wing by inserting it at the front (ie narrowest part) first and then push it into the wing at the rear - Job Done!

 

Headlight Bulbs:

Dip beam (ie round projector lens):

(1) Disconnect the bulb from the wiring loom (Jap-spec cars = grey connector block/ UK-spec cars = 1x spade connector and 1x bullet connector)

(2) Undo the plastic ring holding the rubber grommet and remove both from the car. You now have access to the bulb.

(3) Undo the spring clip retaining the bulb into the housing and pull the bulb straight out.

(4) Replace the bulb and reasemble/reconnect in the reverse order.

NB: Jap-spec = H3C / UK-spec = H3 bulbs

 

Main beam (ie rectangular reflector):

(1) Remove the block connector on the back of the headlight housing by squeezing together the two metal spring clips (this can be quite a fiddly job)

(2) Remove the rubber grommet (you now have access to the bulb)

(3) Undo the spring clip retaining the bulb and pull it straight out.

(4) Replace the bulb and reassembe/reconnect in the reverse order.

NB: Jap-spec and UK-spec cars all use H1 main beam bulbs

 

I hope the above description has been helpful. Please note that this is all from memory and may not be 100% accurate but it's close enough.

 

If you are looking for side repeaters and/or any type of bulbs please remember that I [DTA-Motorsport (UK)] carry full stock of every conceivable bulb ...

I changed a blown bulb today. Following advice on here it was ok to do in situ. A bit fiddly but not worth removing the units (unless you want to do another job anyway). Mine is a UK spec; it was the driver's side unit - the other side looks even more cramped! This was the dipped bulb, not the high beam. A couple of details which seem obvious in hindsight (as always!) but hope some newbie like me finds useful....

The H3 is a tiny little bulb. Pics I have seen make it seem larger (more akin to the bigger bulbs I have had on other cars. From the pics these may be the H1's on the zx high beam?). Anyway because I assumed they would be larger, I was pulling on the bulb mounting for a while instead of the bulb itself!!! The mounting has a metal ring about 2.5cm diameter, which looked just like the back end of a larger bulb. This is the ring with the notch that the spring clip hooks into. The H3 bulb sits inside this ring with two guiding cutouts - a semi-circular one at the bottom & a rectangular one at the top. Once you pull on the bulb itself it comes out easily! When putting the new one in, you will know you have got it seated right when the spring clip does up easily. If it is a struggle, re-seat the bulb. Putting it all back together was a bit fiddly. The rubber cover was hard to get on properly. There is a lip all round the mounting; once you get the rubber cover secured on the lip all the way round it is ok - you need to stretch it slightly to do this. If you keep knocking it off, it is not properly over the lip. Once you do that you can wiggle the plastic cap on, give it a twist & hey presto, it's all back together. A mere 20 minutes later!

There is a lip all round the mounting; once you get the rubber cover secured on the lip all the way round it is ok - you need to stretch it slightly to do this. If you keep knocking it off, it is not properly over the lip. Once you do that you can wiggle the plastic cap on, give it a twist & hey presto, it's all back together. A mere 20 minutes later!

Replacing bulbs is all well and good but HID lights is the only way to go :clap: You would of fit a set in 20mins :tt2:

already got hid in dip beam these are for main beam
