If ever your feel sore at Nissan main dealer prices try a Bmw main dealer and Nissan seem really fair, the little fellow below is an ABS module it controls of course the abs the dsc ( direct stability control ) the active steering and the traction control.

Unfortunately this failed on my 540i recently and whilst I could drive the car still the faults lights on the dash not only bugged me but remind you that all the driver aids mentioned above are not available.

So the first option was to try a company who specialise in repairing these units, sadly no go as it was not repairable! so a call to BMW and the good news its in stock BUT the eye water cost was £970 + vat!!!

The more observant may see that the unit is made by Bosch so a bit of research and I found a specialist company 20 miles from me who can supply the exact same unit direct from Bosch for £360 all in, what a flipping mark up by BMW?

So ends up a happy ending...well sort of, the unit been brand new requires it to be coded to my car, and guess what? BMW quoted me £80+ vat for plugging in their unit and setting it up...arghhhhhh.

its a disgraceful mark-up these manufacturers make... when I worked for Chrysler we bought a windscreen for a Neon, cost us over £400, when it arrived they had left the original invoice from their suppliers on the box... $25!

A few approximate prices from parts enquiries that I've had over the past few days or so...

Mercedes 124/210 series rear driveshafts - £600 + each

Jeep Cherokee front propshaft -£350 to £500 (dependant on model)

Isuzu Rodeo pick up rear ABS sensors - £600 (one big harness)

Impreza MAF - £300

Impreza A/F ratio sensor £300

Forester cat - £800

Plus VAT of course :)

It's a great life in the Parts Department

I dont find BMW too bad for most things.

Some things are stupid, such as your ABS module, but most things arn't as bad as i expect from them.

LOL! Mercs are like that, some parts are completely reasonable then for some reason on other parts they just pick a number & multiply it by another random number!!

Mercs have the option of self dimming mirrors - always been expensive but now £300+ ...... just for the fekking replacement glass!!!

ML mirror frame (just the guts) - £500, add the £300 for the glass, cover if required & a bit of labour & that incident that "just" caused a little damage to your mirror is over a grand!!

MAF sensor on an A Class - every other car on the planet has a seperate MAF, oooh no, not on the A Class - new ECU please - over £1k just for the part!!
