It could be the immobiliser or there is a possibility that you have a bad earth on the battery/bodywork. Do the lights go out when you turn the try to start the engine ?

automatic or manual ?

there's a relais in the fender that controls the starter...that might be the culprit.

The car is manual. Where is the relais in the fender?

I'm not sure in which fender the starter-relay is for a RHD-car (for LHD it is in the fender at drivers side)

Do you normally have to depress the clutch to start the car ? because then the little switch on top of the clutchpedal can also be the cause of your problem..

I had this problem and it turned out to be the Auto start inhibitor switch.

I you have an Auto, try moving the lever through the gears next time it happens.

Might just need adjusting.
