Electric window

My drivers side elctric window has stopped working, I have removed the door card to check the wires, and they are all connected, I can hear the black box which I assume is the relay clicking away whenever I press the button, but no movement, any ideas chaps? whats the easiest way to check/test the window motor is working?

Be carefull - I replace my motor (passenger side) and it still didn't work. Run some wires from the battery to the connector coming out of the motor. If the motor works then you are looking for something else. I had to wire in a fake earth to get it working. If you succeed I'd be very interested in knowing how...

good luck.

Get yourself a digital multimeter if you dont have one already and measure the voltage across the window motor as your 'third' pair of hands pushes the up/down button for the window.

As you push the up/down voltage the relay will invert/normalise the voltage to the motor making it go clockwise/anticlws, and the window will go up or down as expected.

If there is no voltage present at the motor under any condition then you have a break in one of the wires. If there is voltage at the motor it should display (+/-12v) as you push the up/dwn button. If this is the case then you have a knackered motor or something is stopping it from moving (jammed mech. etc).

Hope that helps you.

Thanks guys I will give that a shot

here we go again if you hear the relay clicking in side the drivers door when you press the window button then its your relay box. it happens all the time on zs. the relay box is about eight inches of the bottom of the door you can get to it without tacking the door panel right of undo the screws at the bottom of the door. then pull the door panel of the door at the bottom have a look in side you will see the relay box its black about 4 incheis long and about 1 inch wide it will slide of its bracket. unplug the wires they could be loose. or else you can open the relay box i found i had a dry solder in their just re solder it and it works quit a few people have had the same problem

hey in ours when you press the door open/close sensor u can hear a relay clicking sound in the car when the interior lights come on/off. Is this the problem you just mentioned? If so is it bad cos everything works as expected.

Shaggy,

You are dead right, this is happening to me and your symptom is right so is your repair.Take note!!!!!

Thanks guys, got the window working last night. I tested the motor first by connecting it direct to the battery, worked straight away, reconnected it back to the loom, started to work again!, WTF!!! I didn't do anything!!

But if it happens again, I reckon it points to the relay being the problem like Shaggy said

OOOOOOOOOOOOO yes, this is also the problem i have, it worked for a bit now it's stoped.DO IT NOW!!!! IT WILL GO AGAIN smile.gif

It's a right Bastard to get to when you can't open the window and get the door panel off DUDE biggrin.gif

Hi R U still having problems with your electronic windows. I had the same problem the relay was clicking but not working the windows. I also noticed the windows worked if it rained or I took the car through a car wash. I found if you take the relay out of the car you can carefully prise off the front cover of the black relay box (where the spade terminals are) with a small screw driver and pull out the insides. Once you have done this there are two relays in the unit if you use a bit of sand paper you can clean up the relay terminals and bobs your uncle if you connect the unit into the circuit it works again. Before you put the black relay box back together you can test it by connecting everything up before you put everything back inside the black box but be careful not to earth anything or touch a live terminal. It may not be your problem but it worked for me.

Thanks guys, mine was doing that before it went into the bodyshop! Will sort that now I know what to look for. wink.gif
