Single piece Prop finally fitted, but now hearing funny noise

After months of the thing cluttering up my house finally got round to fitting my single piece prop shaft today. Only problem i noticed was that the new shaft had 2 master splines, where as the gearbox output shaft didn't seem to. Ended up getting it on ok (after lowering the diff) and after getting it all back together pulled it off the lift and the difference was instantly noticeable, the hole car just seemed so much smoother (the centre bearing on the old prop was horrendous, the play on it was unreal).

Couple of meters down the road, noticed a reasonably high pitched whining/tapping noise, it was in time to the speed of the car, i.e. didn't increase/decrease with gearbox speed just speed of the wheels/prop turning, and seen as though nothing else was played with it is pointing to the prop, at first thought it may of been the heat shield catching so put it back on the lift and had another good look and lowered the heat shield but that didn't solve it.

Anyway decided to risk the 40mile trip home ears poised for the noise getting worse but on the home stretch it did seem to have dramatically decreased to a point that it may of even stopped. Anybody think this may be a cause for concern? my idea is if it was something catching or rubbing the fact that it's gotten better or maybe stopped does it mean its just then worn down or even come off?

also did notice that the gearbox seal on the output shaft seems to be on its way out, however before its suggested we didn't lose any oil whilst changing the prop and the noise wasn't there on the way there so i don't think its related. plus it still changes gear just as beautifully as it allways has. Has anybody changed one of these before, does the box need to come out?

as allways answers on a stamped address envelope and any advice, help or opinions is going to be awesome

what one piece prop do you have as i have something similar? I suspect it is the thin guard that goes around the splines as it enters the gearbox that is catching on mine therefore i know it will wear down and stop

Very likely the output shroud on the end of the gearbox ( the tin bit ) slighly catching the prop, seen this a few times and will need a little nudge to correct it, however if only chatching slightly it will wear the touch point and stop making the noise as you have found so unless it returns I would not worry.

Its a Zedworld prop gonzo.

So what is the worse case scenario? if the noise has basically stopped now i should I just forget about it unless returns. but if it continues then its a prop out job again?

if the noise has stopped then all good. single piece has removed any sort of flex that you would of had with a centre bearing so there may be little problems like this. Im not worried about mine anyway

Why did Nissan make a two-piece prop if a one piece prop is fine? I've heard of over engineering before (usually on antique Mercs), but this seems daft. I'm sure there's a perfectly logical explantion - anyone care to explain?

Thanks

Wasn't it something to do with noise reduction?

well noise does seem to have stopped now, took it for a spirited drive last night and it sounds fine, so i'm not worried anymore.

There's more movement in a two piece, so it's more mechanically sympathetic - and a two piece should also smooth the transmission slightly, so improve comfort & noise...

That's a bizarre reason for making a two piece prop! You would have thought that they could have found a way of refining the connections between gearbox and diff, rather than adding extra slack into the system?

Are the UV joints equally spaced then, or asymetric?

It's not bizarre really - it's a GT so all these things are considerations; you've also got to consider the fact that, if you rag the shit out of it, and screw the gearbox, diff or clutch, then Mr Nissan has to pay out on warranty repairs (when new obviously!).

Another consideration is failure - I've seen a one piece fail on track, and it could have been nasty of it had gone on the straight rather than a hairpin... at least with a 2 piece it's not a pole vault situation!!

The set up on the zeds isn't that bad - I've seen older BMWs with huge rubber rings at the front of the prop... made a massive difference removing it.

They do feels so mucher smoother than the origial don`t they?

The propshaft would still be kept in place by the cross brace on the floor pan

They tried this on mythbusters and guess what, its a myth !!it didnt flip the car at all, just mangled and smashed the underfloor to bits.As you,d expect really Lol.
