Trading Standards called me today. The garage have responded to their letter, saying that they are willing to take the Saab back, in part ex for another car in their lot.

Hmm.

Trading Standard lady says that they are quite within their legal rights to offer me a replacement car of equivalent value or to give me the value that I paid for mine, off the cost of another one of their cars. She also said that this is an excellent offer from this garage, given we were expecting no response at all, and that if I reject this offer and pursue a refund, the onus of proving the car's faults lies with me, and I would have to pay for an independent mechanic for an opinion, stop using the car until court, and the judge could throw it out given they have made this offer. So, it looks like I have to accept this offer, provided they are offering a replacement of equivalent value....

BUT - not sure how I feel about having another car from this garage. Actually that's not true, I know exactly how I feel. But I also want a fast resolution given I start Uni in 2 weeks time.

So my thoughts are that I call the toss pots and clarify that they are willing to give me the value that I paid for the car in part ex for another car. If they agree then I have to take a mechanic with me - someone willing to fully check over the car and make sure the essential parts are ok and its not going to be another dog like this one. As it stands, I have been using the Saab for essential journeys, getting it into reverse, 1st and 2nd gears is still an absolute wrestle most of the time, and of course the climate control has never worked.

Any thoughts guys? Roobarb? I'm not going to do anything til Weds as I'm at work all day tomorrow, but I'm off Weds, and I finish work Friday, so I have all next week to possibly resolve this in between Uni registration etc.

Thanks, and hope you all enjoyed JAE, I'm off to drool over your car porn now

The Saab has gone, we now have a Vauxhall Omega. Haven't driven it too much as its currently SORN and I don't wanna tax it til Oct (how early can I do this?)

Its ok, hard to get excited about such cars. Just hoping its more reliable than Saabster. Mikey Bean advised me re the Omega as he's had several, so fingers crossed...

PS - I'm finally a student nurse, woohoo!

He he he! If it was actual lectures, it'd be great. But its fire safety information. And H & S. All important stuff. All terminally dull. Just can't wait to get started next week. Downside is my first text book purchase is £38. Ouch!

Seems I can but as StellaZ said, can't drive it til the 1st. Phew, means I can sort it on my day off

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

Yes if you want to tax it from the first of september

Hi Jane,

I'm pleased your ordeal is finally over - good luck with the Omega and I wish you all the best on your nursing course. Congratulations!!!

From the DVLA website

"When to apply

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance."

I can tax it tomorrow or Fri as Sat is 1st Oct....

No! It's still at gordons. Well it's somewhere cos gordons service don't appear to know about, so I'm assuming they've shipped it off somewhere. Half expecting it to come back as a little blue cube!!

FFS! Must just fill you with confidence....

Not even driven the Omega yet, Marc's just taxed it today and is currently laid underneath it servicing it. Hopefully I'll get out in it this weekend....

Phoned gordons today. They have replaced 1 rear wing so far. All they have to do now is the other 1 and paint it!!
