Last time I raced at Brighton, I crossed the line at 107mph in 4th gear (1/4 mile 14.03 seconds). I remember changing up just before I crossed the finish line so I'm thinking, If I stay in 3rd, at what speed will I hit the rev limiter. I have a DTA chip and don't know what that lets you red line too. i think that i'll be quicker if I don't wast time changing up....

Any ideas?

Im sure 90mph is the top of second, so surely you can do 110+ in 3rd..

That seems a bit high to me mate? I wait to corrected, i thought 2nd went up to 60 odd??

3rd gear, 7200rpm, TT rear drive , Manual = 109 mph

7500 is a fairly typical rpm limit on remapped ECU's and you dont really want to push more than this with stock valve-train and fueling, which would give you about 115mph.

Power starts falling off before 7k with stock Turbos.

This is taking into account stock tyre sizes.

what about 2nd then?

just out of scientific interest, i might have to go outside and scragg the *****cks off mine to find out!

2nd gear - 7200rpm in a Manual TT = 75mph

2nd gear - 7200rpm in a Manual TT = 75mph

thank you Mr Encyclopedia... you are just a wealth of knowledge.

actually you are all wrong ..the maximum speed you can do in 3rd gear is 70mph and 4th and 5th .......just the same 70mph :)

Correct, but were talking race tracks!

My NA was just about to hit the limited at about 97mph going under the gantry

Yep, that sounds right. 7200rpm would be 99mph with the NA rear end.

With standard tyres -245/45ZR16 on 8.5J X 16 rims, the manual twin turbo (final drive ratio 3.69:1) the turbo achieves the following speeds:

Gear MPH RPM

1st 43 7200

2nd 72 7200

3rd 107 7200

4th 139 7200

5th 155 6000 with speed limiter

5th 165 6400 without speed limiter

5th 186 7200 intermittent theoretical, rev limited

The automatic ratios are: 1st 2.78, 2nd 1.54, 3rd 1.00, 4th 0.69, so results for the turbo are (Maximum, as actual speeds will depend on torque converter slip):

Gear MPH RPM

1st 48 7200 Held in first

2nd 87 7200 Held in second

3rd 139 7200 Held in 3rd, overdrive off

4th 155 5500 with speed limiter

4th 178 6400 without speed limiter, not attainable by stock TT

4th 201 7200 intermittent theoretical, rev limited

So with a chipped ECU, 17" wheels I have a chance of getting above 107MPH. Well I'll give it a go on Saturday for the practice run and see how I get on.

Maybe I should have purchased an auto for this type of event.........

well, (and goover can attest to this) in my auto with standard ecu and 19" wheels, i can get about 120 in second. with no hope of changing gear when your ECU isn't talking to the transmission ecu to change gears lol

You either have 60 profile tyres on those 19's, or your doing 9500rpm, or your in 3rd gear, or you have a very generous speedometer there. lol ;)

my speedo reads 5mph slower than what the car is actually doing according to GPS so i have to be extra careful at speed cameras, profile is 30 fronts 35 rears, no 3rd gear as the gear box couldn't change from 2nd, groover was in the car when it went over 100 in second and it was still accelerating.
