Hi guys, everytime i drive my car after rainfall or a wash it gives me a huge jolt and almost like a fuel cut or something, stopping me driving into the revs, this got better as the journey went on.

I was almost certain that the maf was to blame, but only because water was getting on it, and i thought that the journey dried it out as it went.

Today i found this in my filter

That was at the end of the run, i dread to think how much was in there at the beginning.

Its an apexi power intake, not a cheap one i believe. Can i clean this and are they prone to letting in water, or will that be the paper gasket used to blame.

Thanks guys

Mark

Yep, that can cause your problems. Take the filter AND maf off the car and put them in the house for a couple of days. It needs to dry out completely, should be fine once dry.

You need to work out why so much water is getting into it. Have you got a vented centre panel? As these are great for letting water into the filter.

No its a solid one, its even got the seal on the front and back of it, i dont know why its getting so much water in it. When i took it off water fell out of the intake aswell.

Its got a crappy paper filter gasket between the maf and the filter. I think this could be the problem. Im gonna put it all back together with silicone sealant when its all dry and give it a go.

Unless the gasket is absolutly soaked I wouldn't have thought it was the problem. It's more likely that the water is being sucked in via the filter. Have you gone through any deep puddles? As it may have sucked the water in from underneath the car.

There's a little plastic flap on the front of the car that sits under the airfilter, have you got this?

yep, wet cone filter is often the cause of it suddenly cutting out for a split second - after heavy rainfall I always gradually increase the revs to check whether it'll happen with me or not. I have a vented panel so the rain can get right at the damn thing!

However I've never had to take it off to dry out before - a spot of good weather and it's fine again

This is the gasket im talking about.

I really dont think its making a tight enough fit with only 2 bolts and it being circluar.

Ive got that plastic pannel underneath aswell, It only happens after rain or a wash.

Yeah that's not the right gasket for an apexi, it should be squareish on the outer edges and line up with the 4 bolt holes that hold the filter on. Unless you can find a proper apexi gasket, i would do as you suggest and seal it with silicon.

hmm, thanks, i had my suspicions :) This was on when i bought the car, i wonder why they didnt use the proper one. Looks like im on the lookout then,

Cheers guys

Thats an apexi universal gasket which was normally supplied with universal apexi intakes, only the specific z32 cone came with the correct gasket.

Clean both surfaces and a wee bead sealant will do the job.

although thats not the correct gasket, it still doesnt answer the question of why your filter is getting wet, or your Maf for that matter, if your nose panel is solid and you still have the little bit of plastic that covers the filter from the opening in the bumper, there must be something else causing it to get wet, even on a sudden down pour with a vented nose panel mine doesnt get that wet, and if the car is sitting still again, no water on the maf or filter.

My dads not convinced thats the root of the problems either.

I have now sealed the gasket to the maf and its in the airing cupboard, ready for tomorrow.

When i took the filter and maf off the car a few drops of water fell from the intake pipe.

Is there any moisture or condensation in the engine?

that would only be there from the intake, how low down does your filter sit and more importantly what front bumper do you have?

Just had a mini thunderstorm, the bonnet was on the latch but there is a fair bit of water on the plastic at the bottom

looks from that, that the rubber seals on your nose panel are failing and letting water drip onto the Airfilter, well thats what im thinking anyway.

I tell you what, ive got my bonnet on spacers and it brings the front down slightly further that before now. That might not be creating the seal. But im sure it was doing this before i raised the bonnet aswell

Who likes my fix.

Water was falling between the bumper and nose pannel onto the filter (i done some tests with paper)

So ive just cut this sheet out and put it over so that any water getting through now will fall around the filter.

Hopefully this wont affect the sucking power of the filter, but it seems to have cured it.

Looks like you've found an issue, but your also missing the plastic piece that should sit under the filter to protect it from water coming in from below. Quite common for people to mistakingly remove this when they fit an induction kit.

This is how my car came, i bought it like that, Whats the bit im missing, what does it look like?

Like a sheet of black plastic, about the size of an A4 piece of paper, and would normally sit just under the stock airbox. Very simple to knock up something similar.

The jolt you were probably experiencing was the safety rpm cutout at 3000rpm, thats controlled by the ECU when its not getting an appropriate signal from the MAF.
