Mark,

Its probably the shoes which have worn.

Just loosen the cable off, then remove a rear wheel, and you will see a small black rubber plug.

Remove the plug with a screw driver, dont use the slot in the rubber. The plug just pushes in and then you will have to fish around to get it out.

Now with a torch you will see a little cog which can be turned with a screw driver to move the shoes closer to the drum.

Do this until they lock the rear wheel, and then back off slightly.

Same procedure both sides.

Now check the handbrake, and if you slackened the cable and you still need some adjustment you have it to play in the cable adjustment.

Leigh.

Hi Mark

I am in the same position as you at the moment.

My handbrake is fully adjusted at both ends and my shoes are virtually new and it still wont hold the car on a slope.

Courtesy have quoted me $55 per cable. That includes P+P so its about £80 in all. Nissan over here are quoting silly money.

A friend of mine has suggested maybe using some kind of cable shortener which only costs a few quid. Better than £80, especially if it does the trick. I'll let you know what happens.

Gentlemen

...its really easy to sort. Remove the back wheels, find the hole on the rear disks that gives access to the brake shoe adjuster. If I remember right, its at the bottom. Insert the square end of the bar that you use when jacking up the car (it's made for the job) and turn the shoe adjuster untill the disk locks. Back it off a little and the jobs done.

good luck

Jack

Bin there done that Jack. An 11 year old cable that holds a ton and a half car is likely to stretch a bit.

I will update as soon as I get the cable shortener put on.
