Don't panic, I'm not selling the Z!!

Dilemma number one - been made redundant and may have to give up my 2003 deisel Vectra - a nice place to sit with low mileage and factory fitted extras worth about £2.5-3k If I do sell the Vectra, I will then have half a chance of setting up my own Recruitment business from the proceeds.

So, do i swallow my pride and go back to driving a 1997 white Civic - worth about £700 (not my first choice of car if I'm using it for my new business adventure) or keep the Vectra and have less cash?

Dilemma number two - Do I take the plunge and set up my own business or just get another job? Anyone done this them selves? Is it a good time?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, the more I think about it, I can always park the civic round the corner if needed!

I've given it a clean and a service and it's not a bad little runner so I guess I just need to park my ego!!

Yep I'm crap at paperwork too! I'm looking at doing some head hunting work. It's a risk but could be worth a lot of money.

 you had 3 people intrested and i said if they dont want it let me know. so now i find out you didnt let me know. im not happy:ban: lol love you really;)

I'll check my pm's when I get re-sub'd!

Sell both. Buy something tidy/respectable for about £1500, and use the rest for your business ?

Sell the vectra and use the Civic for the business. You'd be surprised, but the "He must be doing well" factor with a car works against you these days, not for you. My old Technical Director used to drive to appointments in a company Berlingo van instead of his brand new Porsche 911 Turbo, because if people think you're doing too well, they won't use you.

You could turn up in either a Vectra or a Civic and have the same effect on them tbh, because the Vectra, they likely won't notice at all (That's why it's the rep's car, it's so plain/common that you just don't notice them unless they're bodykitted up with an ASBO can) and if anything, I'd stick some big stickers on the side of the Civic, that say "LPG Converted!" and you'll likely get business because you're saving the planet!

You don't need to be great with paperwork, just earn enough to pay for an accountant (who will probably actually save you more money than they cost).

As for setting up a business, if you don't try you'll never succeed. But I'd still want to guarantee my income somehow (possibly with part time work) until I was up and running with my new business. What sector are you planning to recruit people in? Who are your clients likely to be? I'd assume you've already got the clients if you're seriously considering this?

As for the car? Keep the Vectra - it looks more professional.

Typical business planers easy steps to starting a small business:

1 Business Ideas

consider what business you want to start

2 Business Plan

after you have your business idea on paper you need to begin building a business plan

3 Financing

Now that you have your business plan, you need to consider financing

4 Getting Started

You now have an idea, plan and money to start your small business

5 Open the Doors Business

it is time to start making money.

Reality

1 + 2 Will cost effort and time

3 + 4 Will cost effort and time

5 Will cost effort and time and of course money, because we all know you cannot make money with out money so my advice to any one thinking about starting a business is to short cut all of the above and see first if you have or can get the money backing, been able to self finance is the cheapest option and stops the greedy bankers making profit on your time and effort.

Good luck

Sell the vectra as theyre pants and unreliable junk, keep the civic as its cheap to run and reliable ,also get your buisness running and make some pound notes:):)

Sell the vectra as theyre pants and unreliable junk

Owned a Vectra 2.5 GSI Estate for 7 years and cost £5,250 been absolutely 100% reliable, transported our 2 dogs every day to the workshop, customers to the station and at weekends doubles up as a van for rubbish runs to the tip, and collection of DIY products and gets parked in airport carparks for weeks and never fails to start, last Winter saw minus 22c where I live, the Vectra started like it was mid summer...now showing 176k miles and still pulls like a train, love the fact that most other wanabe rally stars do not know it came with near 200bhp as standard always a grin moment away from the lights with the hot hatch kids looking shocked in my rear view mirror, in 7 years it has had a cambelt, exhaust and tyres, still on the original clutch and 3rd set of discs...not bad for the miles you have to agree.

Jeff

hurry up and get resubbed, ive had to edit your original post, as it comes across as a advert for selling the motors matey.

Anyway, resub, put um up for sale on the forum, im sure they will shift, then use the proceeds to help start the business.

win win, then just turn up in the zed and look like a right posh git. :tt2:

Okay from running a small self employed business:

Option 1) Keep the civic. If you are going to be doing alot of mileage then it makes more sense in the long run to keep the civic. Sell the vectra and and use a little bit of money to tidy up the civic, it seemed in good nick when i saw it so a little bit of effort would make it look very presentable when turning up to meetings.

Option 2) Keep the Vectra, from a marketing point of view it's a nice, normal commuter/sales car. Not too flash to be considered vulgar and that you just make your margins and move on. The civic may work against you as with marketing i know first impressions last and if they think "well if he's only driving a 15 year old civic then he can't be that good". They would look at the vectra, see it as a sensible choice of car, it's smart and isn't too old and will last you longer than the civic in some ways and more importantly the last thing you want to do is turn up to an improtant meeting and be tired and i know from driving bigger cars you always feel refreshed when you arrive

In terms of setting up the business i still go by the rule of all you need is a business card!

I walked into many a business over the 6 years i've been trading and introduced myself. I've had a website and pamphlet to hand and more times than not been recommended by word of mouth to the potential customer so there's no need for reams of business plans just a business bank account you can accept cheques into and that's it. If you're employing anyone else or you need a business start up loan then you WILL have to present a business plan and the bank will more than likely help you get started by pointing you in the right directions if you ask them. Take as much evidence of your skills as you can when you go (a cv or report would do)

Think about contracts early on, take out indemnity insurance and become a limited company to be covered if anything goes wrong and notify the tax office so you can start paying your stamp duty.

We'll have to have a proper chat on the subject one night buddy when you're free and we'll discuss your ideas :)

Awww , not again Mr Ish, you are having bad luck with employment :(

I can't help with the desicion weather or not too go self employed (you would know the market better than most having been in that trade, and would know some contacts).

But ultimately sell the car you can get most cash for, and run around in the cheapest one. There is no shame whatever car you drive as long as it isn't chavved up !

Just to make it clear Vodkashots has done what I and any other moderator would have done. The rules were broken and as a moderator it was edited you have to accept this and not get personal about it.Sorry to here about the redundancy but its not easy for any of us here and friends are good to have so dont lose any.

Cheers Mate, might be the best thing that has happened to me if I can just survive the first 3-4 months. So the Vectra will be going and will hopefully raise just under £3K.

Cheers Gary, We have all made bad calls at times me included and I will always put my hands up in such circumstances. The last thing I need when asking people for advice about my recent misfortune is someone taking figures out of my thread which are a crucial part of the decision process. Do you understand what I am saying? I think most people on here do!!

I think your missing the point here.

IF you wanted advice on a business venture, where was the point in even saying the cars were forsale? why even mention where the money was coming from.

"im trying to see if its a good idea to start up a business, potentially i might have around 800 from one source, or 1800 from another, to put funds into getting the business up and running, also, what car would be better for my business image? a civic or a vectra?"

there ya go, no mention of the cars being the main source of your income, the same question, and also the cars in the same thread.

We have had plenty of people who have put up threads the same as yours, and sooner or later you get someone post asking you to contact them about the cars.

sorry matey, as i said it wasn't a Judgement call, its what we do to every post that starts like that from a registered user.

Jumping the gun on my comment about removing it, and then throwing a paddy about it while thinking your hard done by, doesnt make the situation better does it?

at the end of the day, i did what we always do to every thread. may be you should of worded it better to start with.

im just wondering though, had it been someone else who editted it, would you of acted the same?

I understand what you are saying but I must repeat Ian did what I would have done and the rules are clear on this and personal attacks are not accsepted but you are still getting personal with Vodkashots so your status will have to be concidered.

Agreed - Gary and Ian have moderated in accordance with the club's rules/AUP.

I've tidied this thread and "soft" deleted any posts that I consider unnecessary - so please let's keep it on topic.

And please remember, personal attacks on moderators WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. One member has received a week's ban for that earlier this evening, let's not make it two in one night!

Keep the one that is most presentable if you will be seeing clients in it, I started my company on the Back of Being made redundant and have never looked back. Best of luck to you with it all... remember you can never be made redundant ruinning your own company.

If you get stuck with anything at all business wise drop me a line, will be happy to help.
