hey up! my car has been standing for about a week, everything fine when i parked it. but now the pedal goes straight to the floor. it felt like it was pumping up briefly, but then nothing. there was very little fluid in it (not empty) and i know it was full before i parked up. but ive topped the fluid up and pumped like buggery, to no avail :-( is there a sytematic diagnosis procedure for tracking down the fail point? i know my first task is to see where my fluid went. any advice? many thanks

yea sounds like master cylinder to me too, i know this as I had a Vectra which stood also for a while then had same symptons as your Z, turned out to be the bmc

btw, is replacing the bmc on a Z a hard job?

Straight forward, takes around 30 to 40 mins all from under the bonnet and bleed in the boot, no wheels off or jacks required.

12mm spanner for cylinder removal

10mm brake fitting spanner to undo brake lines @ abs pump bleed nipples

10mm socket undo the cruise control bracket

Paper towel

bmc seal failure is common,

Yup - it was on the early models IIRC - if you're getting a replacement item, try to make sure it's from a series 2 or later, as they weren't so prone to failing.
