I had a problem like this in second and fourth when I first got mine. Turned out the rubber boot round the shifter linkage wasn't in properly so it let more noise through when pulled back!

I was convinced my box was knackered too. Might be worth a quick look before you splash out ....

Is the box the same as a TT 2+2? If so try a good breakers. Or import a new one from japan (£££'s) Or repair/recondition your own. Talk to SE or similar.

If the box is specific to swb you're choices are more limited and a repair may be the best way.

gearboxes of the SWB and 2+2's are the same.

You could even fit a gearbox of a NA, but this is not a very good idea though, since the NA-box is made of weaker materials.
