less than 10KG at a guess

well that was fast...lol... cheers...

can anyone confirm... need it a bit more accurate than a guess..

not for postage, it's for gas lift mod and I want to work out the required force to hold it open..

I have been toying with the idea of doing this and have bought some gas struts, you want a small weedy one, I have a small one :blushing: I don't mind admitting but it does not budge when I try and depress  way way too powerful.

Keep the thread posted on your progress

thanks... I got a cheap one off ebay but it's way too strong... I know the Z bonnet isn't too heavy but wanted to work out what force I need because the brackets I intend to use are only rated to 400N.

anyway will post a pic when finished it it turns out any good...lol...

See I was right :D

Just don't use the struts from the tailgate, you'll launch your bonnet about 60 foot behind the car

I know this has been done before and I’ve seen a few post on how to do it.

Well, I’m very happy with the finished product but I can’t say it was a straight forward job.

Firstly, deciding what side to put the lifter, do I move the vac unit for the cockpit gauge or do I move the fuel filter? I went for the fuel filter, not sure it was the right option but it worked.

Secondly, finding a way of fixing the bracket to the body was a bit of a pain. The only way I could see to get behind to put a nut on any thing was by way of under the dash… too much trouble. So using one of the pre existing holes I went for a fixing that wouldn’t need it, managed to find a “Type D Insert Nut” (with Alan key to do it up)….. seemed to go in nice though the double skin and sit tight..

Type_D_Insert_Nut.jpg

had to drill the hole in the bracket (for the strut) a bit bigger to fit the bolt but it works a treat…

I then made a support for the top fixing (metal 3” x 1”) I also had to find a nut (& split washer) that would fit the fixing.

The easy part was working out how far up the bonnet to drill the hole, the hard part was getting the nut in position and holding it to do it up (though the little access hole... magnet stick & pointy nose pliers).

After adjusting the pressure in the strut (via release pressure grub screw) so that it would close easily but still hold the bonnet open, the final problem was getting it to close without hitting the feed to the fuel filter, ended up moving the filter a bit…

Anyway this is the result….

LOL... don't blame you... I'd be happy to provide more detailed information and using the divers side enables you to use an existing bolt hole.

2.2 Kg difference between your measurement and Zedworlds..Mmmmmmm

why would that be??? do they make them out of different metals? is theirs without the padding and yours with?

Unless you have a LHD I think you mean passengers side, where you have put yours :confused1:

I did locate a 6mm threaded hole on the drivers side near the small fuse box which I did start to work from but got fed up with closure issues and too powerfuller gas struts - job shelved!!!!!!!!!!!

Padding only weighs ounces :cool3: my socks are heavier and that's after wearing them all day :winkiss:

no that's the one....

but if you use the bracket I bought it should push the strut far enough out to work fine.

have a look at my 3rd pic again and transpose it to the drivers side.... :)

by the way I have a spare bracket and strut.. (bought two in case I wanted to so both sides)

Ah, since I couldn't get confirmation from the suppliers as to what was required I bought the adjustable one (one way only, so you have to be sure, as you release pressure).

however I can assure you it wasn't very much (i.e. not strong).

sorry I can't be of any more help.
