turbo housing removal

following this guide http://www.renault5turbo.free.fr/Stock%20FORUM/Documentation/T25_turbo_instruction.pdf

but ran into a slight problem, it just says "remove the bolds and the holding plates"

doesnt mention anything about the fact the bolts hit the bloody oil housing in the center of the turbo. tried pulling it off but no joy with the bolts half out.

bit sooty but no sign of oil, slight play in the shaft. might even have a laugh and refurb them.

looks like your getting there bud :)

bit of strange usage of the spanners, and having to put a bolt back in, and started undoing the bolt against the spanner and out she popped. got the other side to do now. :)

going to be a dab hand at get turbos off of manifolds at this rate. this will be my 3rd pair ive done lol

Are you gonna strip the actual housings down? Ive got a pair ready to split for 360 bearings when i get the time

yep, going to go for a 360 degree thrust bearing. will get me some of the cir clip pliers first so i can do it properly. but the housing is going on the turbos already on my engine.

will refurb these, get the balancing done to make sure and then might stick them aside for when the inevitable happens on my current ones lol

that circlip is a PITA the only way i found to do it is with screwdriver to work it out slowly as you go around.

Let me know how you get on with taking the spindles off as this is my next step and im pretty sure they are reversed threads :)

yeah they are, i dont have a bench clamp so will be using some mole grips and a 14mm socket.

When i did mine i fitted 360degree bearings , what annoyed me was i had a pair refurbed at Midland Turbo a few years ago , now at the time i didn,t know much about turbos and i asked how much it would cost to fit 360 bearings , they quoted me £100 a turbo extra, i,m thinking they need some special machining or something , i didn,t have the money for that so just had a basic re-con done , which still cost £500 with one new impeller wheel !

I wanted to do the manual ones i,d bought so i opted for the 360 kit and it,s a 2 min job and a direct replacement for the 270 standard bearing !!! A piece of pi55 to fit , why they wanted £200 extra is beyond me.

While i had mine apart i fitted staggered gap rear oil seals in them , same again a direct replacement for the standard seal but cures the smoking on tickover issue once they,ve done a good few miles and on high boost, most smokey Zeds turbo,s are actually still in good usable nick it,s just the rear seals that lets oil leak past .:crying::crying:

yeah i know mate, thats why i was opting to do it my self, i love learning new things and what better way to do it than research and then attempt.

found a nice site thats willing to balance everything for £50 per turbo on special at the moment.

thanks for the info though matey

Did you have to send them off for re balancing mate?

if you mark them up properly before you take them apart, you shouldnt have to rebalance them, if you get the markings all lined up when putting them back together

Wish I'd known this beforehand  oh well a job for the future then..

ill have some spare cores once ive done this housing swap, no play good for a rebuild if you mark the buggers up first lol

I wouldn't trust just marking up the turbos to balance them it needs to be done on the proper machine as at those high rpm they will get damaged in seconds if they are not balanced right. Even with markings I can't see you getting the right torque setting and them all lining up it would be a miracle if they did

I've just re read it and I think you are talking about balancing the whole turbo housing??? It is the chra that needs balancing the center part with all the bearings and seals not the housings that just matters so the pipes line up

No bud , just marked them and didn,t clean the impeller or compressor wheels , just mainly de-coked the rear end of the shafts and fitted the overhaul kit , felt as smooth as silk when i put them back together , i,ve now got a zedworld chip and took the boost to 14.5 psi and it,s frighteningly quick , no whistling noises from the tubs .

The ones i had profesionally done only lasted about three years and not that many miles so for £180 and a few hours on a bench i thought i,d give it a go :thumbup1:

A couple of how to do,s i used
