Welcome Jim ... and good luck looking ...took me 8 months to find my first and 6 months for the second and 3 months for the 3rd and 4th ... look for history,cambelt change and rust on the rear arches

Also, if they list after market parts, make sure they come with them parts. check bodywork, especially under the sills and under the drivers and passenger side sill area.

 

Dont trust the mileage unless its backed up with full service history with stamps, if its a import check on the cambelt covers, there will be a sticker saying what date and mileage the cambelt was changed, check this off against what the advertised mileage is.

 

It would also depend how much your willing to spend, but take it for a drive and make sure it comes up to temp (needle around the half way mark on the gauge) and stays there, make sure there is no smoking at idle (unless its condensation from the exhaust but a good 30min drive should clear that)

 

If its a twin turbo, give it a little bit (not too much) and make sure the boost gauge goes past 7psi which is safety boost. and would indicate a problem. Stock boost is 9psi under normal boosting.

 

rev it past 2500 and hear for any knocking or banging, hold it there for around 5 seconds, then hold it at 3500, if you cant achieve 3500 revs, its most likely faulty MAF but again could indicate more problems.

 

Check the carpets for wet patches, it could indicate if the roof leaks or not on a T-Top.

 

there are lots to check for on these cars to be honest. im not trying to put you off in anyway, but some sellers dont exactly tell the truth about these cars when it comes to selling them.

I'd say for 4k you can find a well sorted car that isn't going to be full of problems. If you buy from a forum member you will at least know what you're getting - no one will try and pull a fast one on you on this forum.

 

I, like you, wanted a TT manual. It took me 5 months to find the right car at the right price and when I did, it was in bloody scotland.. Took the train up, and eventually, drove the car back - for just under 3.5k. So it is possible. What happened after that I won't say, as I think I was a little unlucky. But, be in no doubt, these are not cheap cars to run. A TT will comfortably hit 170 clicks and needs maintaining like any other high performance vehicle.

 

The best thing you can do, is get someone from the forum (who is local obviously) to come and look at any serious contenders with you. You check em out first if you think it looks good, get someone to validate your hunch. And always budget a few hundred quid to put a few things right. Its quite likely there will be a few little things to sort out.

 

Take your time and find the right car, if you want your Zed experience to be a positive one. Good luck with the hunt!

Wow judging by the responses I was lucky to find mine so quick!! Tbh if you want the tt I don't think your gonna find a decent manual car for 2.5k you should be able to find a good rust free auto for that though. The thing with owning these cars is,

 

And I'm not trying to put you off coz I absolutely love mine,

 

but if you buy a cheap one it will cost a small fortune to fix for example mine has just cost 1700 to put right (mainly due to poor workmanship by a previous mechanic) and I didn't even think there was anything wrong with it!! They hide problems very well because they are so reliable if you know what I mean, they just keep going, mine had boost leaks, cambelt put on a tooth out, timing at 7 degrees advanced just to name a few and it still felt great

 

All I'm saying is spend the right money THIS side of the process and not later on when something goes drastically wrong

Your budget is damn tight now and what you get for that sort of money from what i have seen on here WILL need work...

 

Hang onto that money and just wait, many will come past your nose for that kind of coin, problem is most will be rooted.
