Trying to find insurance for my girlfriends VW Polo, its nothing special just a 1.4 worth £1000, she is 23, no claims or accidents etc and all the quotes are coming back £500+!

Call me old fashioned, but I was expecting more like £300-odd or £400 at a push.

Can anyone recommend a decent insurer as all these compare the annoying adverts, confused.shite and moneystupidmarket are robbing pigs.

I refuse to believe we cant find it cheaper, or am I wrong?

Have you tried swiftcover? They insure both our cars atm, always really cheap for us. And we've recently found that, weirdly, having Marc on my policy brings the quote down, so try that?

yeah swiftcover were actually cheapest, but thats when I rang admiral and told them I want to cancel as I'd found it cheaper elsewhere

i think i have to disagree with you there. you shouldent have to have your car insured to sit on your drive. but if you are caught driving without the punishments should be MUCH more harsh!

I've already had this argument on another forum. The reason for the law is because far too many people are dishonest, as opposed to honest. If I have a car sat off road, I keep it insured, whether it's MOT'd and Taxed or not, so this particular law doesn't affect me at all. However, if I had one SORN'd and I didn't want to insure it, that'd be fine too. Baring in mind you cannot get Tax without insurance and you can't drive a car on the road without an MOT, I see no problem with the logic that, if it's MOT'd and Taxed, it should be insured, period. Basically because if you've got Tax and MOT, you clearly intend to drive it at some point, or you'd have claimed your tax back.

I totally agree that these 'where's there's blame, there's a claim' outfits are just a piss take. Did you hear about that bloke who had about 40 accidents on the same roundabout? Each time with a car full of 'mates' who all got out holding their necks..

But, as far as the new SORN policy goes, I'm in favour of that. There's way too many people driving without insurance - which is why my premium goes up every year instead of coming down. Anything which helps get these scroungers off the road, has to be a good thing, right?

considering how long ANPR has been running on most police force car, im sure that figure has actually dropped a bit. i think its now just used as an excuse to force prices higher on insurance. ok a few get away with it here and there, but hell i couldn't even get over to a tyre place to get my car sorted out once with out the old plod pulling me over, apparently i didn't have insurance on the vehicle, when i asked them to ring the insurance company, they had made a mistake and put a Y instead of a U on my documents.

But i didn't even make it 12miles before i set off a police ANPR car.

Yeah unfortunately not everyone lives in an area with lots of police around. Most days I drive out, I don't even see a police car, let alone one with ANPR. I could probably drive my car around with no tax, test or insurance, quite happily, and not get pulled by the fuzz, but I'm honest, I wonder how many of my neighbours are as honest?

a - Is this why you're called Jap Slapper? On account of your hostility to other Jap cars!

b - The FTO is a pretty looking coupe with reasonable poke and would be a decent enough car for my missus to drive around in. It might not be the last word in chassis dynamics, performance or economy - but I still prefer the looks of it compared to modern euro boxes.

c - I think there are far worse cars you could take offence to.. QUOTE]

a - Nope, I didn't formulate a forum username based on my disliking of any particular automobile's origin, so no hostility there that I am aware of. jap.slapper refers to a skill set, nothing more.

It's just my personal opinion that the FTO is not a particularly good car

b - 'pretty', 'reasonable' and 'decent'.....there's nothing really anything special there to justify the extortionate quote

c - To my knowledge I haven't taken offence to any car, I just don't like the FTO for numerous reasons, some of which are listed above.

There are a few reasonable insurers out there though, I pay around £300 for my Hilux (sureterm direct fully comp + European/tow cover with just me on the policy), we pay £290 for our family Mitsubishi Grandis MPV (both my wife and I fully comp, price comparison website), we paid £400 for both of us, fully comp on a 1.5 ltr Nissan Wingroad import estate (Adrian Flux) and I'm hoping that classic insurance on the SWB TT will be around £300 or less.

I've found that a lot of insurers will give some form of discount if you are a club member of that particular car type, and certain advanced driving quals will also get you a premium reduction.

what im saying though is, there is more of a deterrent though now a days. i bet the numbers have dropped.

Im the same though, i wont drive the car with no tax / insurance, its just not worth the risks to other people or the points on my licence.

.

My brother in-law (who is 22) sold his Celica 2.0GT and got a Mitsubishi FTO GPX.....the insurance cost was near idential. He however could'nt get a 200sx as it was more than twice the price to insure.

Which is the opposite to the quotes you got.

There has to be some sort of random number generator with quotes these days.

There was a programme on last night, not sure if any of you watched it, where a young woman was pulled over at a petrol station by the Police because the car she was driving showed up on the system as having no insurance.

As it turned out the car was registered in her husbands name and she claimed that it was insured, in his name.

She couldn't get her head around the fact that even if it was insured in her husbands name then that didn't mean that she could drive it.

Eventually her husband appeared on the scene.

- The car wasn't insured full stop

- The woman had 14 points on her provisional licence

- The woman had applied for 3 licences using different details and was eventually caught out by the DVLA

The car was impounded and joined the other 500 cars that are impounded by the Police every day due to no tax, no insurance etc

When you consider that the most that she will get is a slap on the wrist and potentially would lose the car if they don't pay the measley sum of £120 for its release, where's the deterent?

Now this car was actually a pretty tidy looking Ford Focus but you can imagine that if it was a complete shite box worth next to nothing, then you can see why a lot of people, especially with 14 points on a provisional licence!!! would not bother with tax, insurance and MOT etc as its cheaper just to take the risk

I think that penalties should be much harsher for offenders, especially persistant offenders

just my 2p worth

The FTO quote is the one that surprised me.....maybe the insurance companies figure that if you're the kind of person who wastes their money on a gash car like that, then you obviously don't mind getting ripped off.....so bumped the quote up as a result!

Well, it seems to me you have plenty of experience of 'Gash' cars.

And you had a problem with this!!

We've been saying this for ages, I think they just make it up on the spot!

Marc's 14 yrs younger than me, so he always put my insurance through the roof, until about 2 months ago, when suddenly its cheaper for him to be on my policy than not. WTF?!

This is our second Grandis as a family car, it's ideal as it offers good fuel economy, 7 seats and enough room for myself, my wife, our 3 children and our dog.

I don't like the FTO so get over it fella, if you do then buy one.

I'm not entirely sure what your problem is chief but maybe take yourself for a walk to burn it off

End of chat

I think the FTO is one the best looking Jap sports cars in standard trim. Like a baby aston martin from the front.

Yeh its fwd and only 2litre(albeit 200hp) , but take it for what it is - A nice little junior jap entry sports car, ideal for young owners and popular with girls.

There's a difference between not liking something and calling it gash and insulting people who have/would buy one. Perhaps you should consider your opinions a little more carefully, or think before you share them with others. If you can validate a strong statement with reasonable fact, then fair enough - you've at least made an attempt to qualify what you've said. If you can't or don't - don't be surprised if people take issue with what you've said.

As far as your car choices go, I have nothing against them in all honesty. Wants and needs are different things - a family car needs to be many things - I appreciate that. I was hoping you might see the irony, however.

As for telling me 'end of chat', I'll decide when I've said my piece, thanks.

If I have inadvertantly offended any members on the Nissan 300zx forum who may be considering buying a Mitsubishi FTO then I appologise unreservedly.

My intention was simply to express my opinion that I personally do not like FTO's and would never consider buying one.

My use of the term 'gash' may have been misconstruded, as I intended to use it as an alternate description for 'rubbish'.

Having witnessed and lived with the constant moans of dismay of a colleague who spent a lot of time and money on a 1996 FTO only to openly admit after 2 years of ownership, that he had made a costly mistake in trying to improve what is effectively a 2lt FWD car with limted performance gains pound for pound.

Torque steer was the cars undoing and the FTO in question was sold as a breaker.

My colleague subsequently replaced the FTO with an imported LHD Mitsubishi Eclipse which 2 years on (Please skip the next statement if you are looking to purchase a Mitsubishi Eclipse in the not too distant future) is again proving itself to be another 'rubbish' car, as the moans are still a daily occurance (although I have recently left the post, it is still a running joke....my colleague that is, not the Eclipse)

My reference to FTO owners and their relationship with insurance companies was based on my personal knowledge of my colleagues character, which could only be described as 'muppetry personified'.

A Mitsubishi Grandis is a surprisingly good car for a family, and I would argue that it should not sit within the 'gash car' category (it's got a DVD and everything!), however I fully respect your opinion based on your personal experience of the car in question.

The Nissan Wingroad, which incidently is not the car pictured, is a cheap and cheerful runabout that would be ideal for a young family who require an economical tribe transporter, granted it's not the prettiest car in the world and neither would it make headlines through its exploits at Santa Pod, but it is what it is, an economical 5 seater estate car.

'End of chat' was not intended as an unstruction from me to you (I wouldn't be so rude), it was merely an expression of how I believed that I had explained my position clearly on this matter and therefore would no longer be required to continue this conversation.

Quite clearly I failed in expressing this intention and have subsequently 'continued chat' in order to make my point much clearer.

again I appologise if my opinion has caused offence and I wish all potential FTO'ers many happy years of FTO'ing

Peace :thumbup1:
