Brake Disc Recomendations

When I brake hard I get steering vibration, which gets worse the harder I brake, so I’m thinking the front disks are becoming warped. I’m going to use this opportunity to upgrade the disks; can anyone recommend a suitable replacement for use with the original calipers?

EBC do some nice turbo groove discs, semi drilled as well to prevent cracking like some fully drilled ones do.

Herman,

Before you jump in and buy new disks make sure that your tension rods are not worn and causing similar symptoms. If braking very gently whilst coming to a halt, can you feel the pulse of warped disks in the braking effect ? If not then you should be looking to check the tension rod bushes before changing the disks, or at least get the disks confirmed as warped with a dial gauge.

totally agree with Andy. I'm in exactly the same position as you and from the info and advice from people on this forum it sounds like my tension rod bushes.

Just as a reminder some months ago I fitted some copy discs and pads see pic after the dreaded brake judder/ warp and can say how good they have been for the price about £48 each available from supplier in B.ham they are made in Japan and so far have reccommended to others on the forum (Matty for one ) who have found them ok.

Brembo Skyline r33 upgrad. The best thing you can do in my opinion, it is not to expensive and they really and truly work sooooooooo much better than the stock ones, its a joke.

Stillen drilled Brembo castings which look so nice I'm never gonna fit them ever ever!!! wink.gif

Warren are you on about the discs or calipers? I wouldn't mind a set of Skylark calipers.

Im on about the full set of skyline calipers and discs.

They come direct of a nissan skyline R33

Thanks for the offer; I had seen those but am currently out of work, so I better give them a miss, in the future definitely.

As for my disks, they seem ok for the last few days, but I have been driving slower.

Tell me more about the tension rod bushes.

  • 2 months later...

I had my Z 16 months and the disc vibration has been getting worse all the time. Done the tension rod bushes - some improvement but no cure. Rebuilt the calipers and sticking pistons which probably was the reason they had uneven wear. Just had the discs skimmed and boy instantly warped worse than ever with the pedal moving now. Thought the hubs must be knackered and wheel bearings out. Fed up taking them on and off so took advice here and bought some 20 grooved ones from 3gbrakes. They machine them in house. Brembo castings, no bullshit advice from them and cheaper than Nissan stock discs which are about £100 each plus vat. Incidently they say they do lots of discs for 200s and 300s. Says it all.

Now got great brakes, smooth and powerful. Like a new car now.

Willie

herman,

is you car jap or uk, i was told (and shown) by philz that the disks for the 2 cars are different, one has a deeper bell on it than the other.

Mine is a UK car, the problem turned out to be a cracked rear pad ! Last time I pay £50 for genuine rear pads !

WillieO, what are the part numbers for the disks ?

You can find details on the 3gbrakes website.

http://www.3gbrakes.co.uk.

Also on the different discs - NAs have thinner discs than twin turbos. TTs stock size are 30mm thick with a 28mm minimum.

3g have the type with 10 grooves and the drilled spots or with 20 grooves and no spots. 20 groove are slightly dearer £10 each. You can see them with prices on the website

Willie

Cheers for the Info, I'll give them a ring for the information.

BTW, I'm assuming your still using the stock calipers ?

Herman

Herman

Yep stock calipers but rebuilt with new seal kits and freed off and cleaned pistons. Both calipers had sticking pistons on one side each!

Even painted them red - sad eh?

Willie

I replaced my front disks with Tarox 40 grooved and painted the calipers yellow. I'm sad too. Not sure whether it is the pads or the yellow paint that makes them screech though.

Just out of interest has anybody heard of, or even tried, TORMOS discs???

I have them on my car at the moment,Standard size discs all round but 12 groove and drilled both front and back. They are heat tempered to 1200 degrees C and they are the absolute nuts. They cost £400 for the set and for value for money i don't think they can be beaten??!! BTW i also have EBC Green pads on the front and a Japanese uprated pad on the back(can't remember the name though!!)

Paul

Paul,

Those TORMOS discs you meantioned, where can you get them for £400 a set?

As I need to replace my discs and pads all round now and wanted to get the Porterfield Heat treated discs.

Cheers,

Trev

I have the Tormos disks on the front with EBC Red Stuff pads.

Made a huge difference over stock.

I think they cost me about £275.00 including a set of Ferrodo pads which they recommended.

I got mine from a Tormos Ad in Max Power or Fast Car. They say they can supply disks for any make or model of car.

They are zinc galvanised to prevent corrosion and come in silver or gold finish.

If anyone speaks to them find out how much the rear ones are - my stock ones are badly scored and need new pads too.

hi m8 give this site a try www.ginnmotorsports.com//brakes.htm its a 12 half inch disc kit wich i think is used on the gto tt this kit is designed for the zx $450 all in i dont no if its any good one of the lads put it on the forum a while ago

The 3G link above had an extra fullstop in it that caused problems. Try http://www.3gbrakes.co.uk

They have some good information on terms, etc.. for the differencies in the disc designs. Their prices are also shown for comparison (although Warren negotiated better for a group buy, some time back).

Both 3G and Tormos look to have good recommendations for stock sizes. The GTO upgrade looks interesting, but then when fitting larger wheel rims there appears to be so many different ways (and costs) to go. Good luck....I'm still trying to make my mind up as well. Geoff
