putting a plate onto retention?

I am about to sell my car but I want to keep my private reg, what form do I need to fill out does anyone know? I understand I cannot let the car sell until the reg has been confirmed that it is on retention?

    That's right, you cannot sell the car until the reg number is on a retention certificate, otherwise it will belong to the new keeper. Can't remember what form it is off hand, but your local VRO will provide all the details for you.
