Here's a controversial one for a Friday afternoon...

It's not meant to offend and is more tongue in cheek, but I look forward to the reaction!

-------------------------------

So what is a sports car and what isn't? Is it just me who thinks that the majority of people have no idea at all? Do all these people driving 2 door saloons (thinking that they're "sports cars") make you laugh...or sick?

Any Porsche (except the Cayenne), Ferrari, Lambourghini, NSX, GT-R, Z32/Z33/Z34, RX-7, Z4, SL, R8 etc. is most definitely a sports car.

An Audi A5 Coupe, 3-series coupe etc. most definitely is not! Even the much vaunted M3 is simply a souped up 2-door saloon with stiff suspension and a powerful engine. Here goes...

Wikipedia definition:

"A sports car is a small, usually two seat automobile designed for high speed driving and maneuverability. Sports cars have been either spartan or luxurious, but good handling, minimum weight, and high performance are requisite."

What you've done there mate is confuse the word "Sport" with the word "Shite"....

wouldn't class a sports car as just "small" or the need to be very "light"

Id say that mainly anything with a sleek appearance with good performance and handling, which is a broad range of cars.

Personally anything that feels "sporty" could also be considered a "sports" car. kind of a strange thread as opinions differ widely depending on who you speak too.

For a laugh

Whats differnet between a GTR and a M3 that makes the GTR a Sports car and the M3 not ?

EDIT : nevermind, just realised you meant the new GT-R, not the skyline GTR's

I dont really go along with classifications for cars, but I guess I'd agree with what you have said.

A Sports car is a dedicted built 2 seater (or 2+2) performance car.

Although I'd probably still refer to the M3 as a Sports car, even if its not by pure definition.

Edited by Yowser

think you will find an M3 is more than just a normal 3 series with big engine and stiff suspension lol

but a sport's car it aint, wouldnt say a new GT-R is a sport's car either, it's more a supercar

doesnt really bother me what people think their car is classed as, as long as they are enjoying it then it doesnt really matter does it?

I'd say a sports car is one designed from the outset as a sports car (Audi R8, Ferrari 360 etc).

Not another car designed for famlies etc adapted to be sporty (M3, Audi RS4 etc).

i always thought "sports car" came from the early days with cars like the morgans, austins the MG's etc etc. 2 seaters normally convertibles no real driver aids. moden ones being mx5, mr2 to a certain extent and the good old caterhams. real drivers cars i feel are sports cars none of this air con rubbish as they come under GT's

I agree with this shorties are sports cars LWB are for people that wnat something more practical than a sports car as they need rear seats so the likes of scoobies, M3s and LWB :2guns:

300zx are shit period. all of us have one thats not working, has faults, and gets whooped on the road.

HA.

yep, having a bad day, wonder why........ 300zx! POS. non sports car.

the other question is what stops it being a sports car and makes it a muscle car. we hear the term jap muscle car banded about a fair amount these days, i certainly wouldnt call a shortie a muscle car. my lwb is listed as a hatchback on the insurance! previous insuarnce it was a coupe. what about corvettes etc? thats another question...

I once read somewhere, that a sports car is defined as having a longer bonnet, than roof.

Therefore a z most certainly is one.

To me a muscle car is a car that goes fast in a straight line but is a bit shite round the bends.

To me :lol::lol:

A muscle car has to be an American/Austrailian V8

yeah, that as well
