I suffer from insomnia but lately it's been really bad. I literally haven't slept since last thursday. I really don't know what to do as I can't think clearly am a danger to others and getting very snappy and confused, which isn't like me at all.

I've tried all the sleeping advice but it just doesn't work, the Doctor's aren't really any help as I used to take zopiclone sleeping pills but manged to get addicted to them - twice, so now don't know what to do. If I don't sleep soon i think ill go mad.......

I`m not much help when it comes to being a doctor, but cut out caffene, alcahol and drugs..... and have a glass of hot milk and a tommy tank before bed ;)

It's an option but tbh I'm a bit freaked out by somebody watching me try to sleep

My mother in law takes benylin.

She bought me some as I had a cough and when I was on the stuff I slept very well

Go to Boots and anything that makes you drowsy put it in your basket

I had to go to a sleep clinic a few years ago as I never slept well, used to fall asleep at my desk at work and even stopped breathing whilst I slept. I was put in a room on my own and hooked up to a few monitors, then left on my own. Nobody was watching me! The nurse did pop in occasionally to check on me.

Turned out I had sleep apnea, my windpipe relaxes too much when I sleep and closes. I stop breathing for around 20 seconds, gasp for breath, stop breathing, gasp for breath. Happens all night, so I never got to proper REM sleep.

Thanks to sleep clinic finding this out I now sleep with a machine pumping air through my nose forcing my throat open. Still dont sleep brilliantly, specially when I have a cold, but it really helps.

So I would definately recommend spending a night in the clinic, they are best qualified to help you out.

Try Melantonin

Get the sublingual ones I think they come from wholefoods.com

If you want more info pm me

I didn't know that you could have CPAP at home! Glad you found something which helps you even a bit - lack of sleep is torture

Gooner - that sucks mate, glad you got it sorted.

Tony - I've tried most of the over the shelf stuff like nitol, chloraphenimine etc and they just don't work on me, I seem to have a very high tolerance to drugs. Is this stuff any good?

I know your pain Steams. I've suffered from insomnia for years now. Gets worse the more stressed I get, but I too seem to have a big problem with always being tired, occasionally I'll wake up and feel awesome all day, but not very often. Most of the time I'm tired, ratty and want nothing more than to go back to bed. I have a feeling that for whatever reason I'm not reaching that proper state of REM sleep myself. I don't think it's sleep apnea though.

yeah, you get stuck in a never ending cycle, no sleep so get stresses, which stops you sleeping and so on

Had insomnia for over ten years and was on Zopiclone and have been on Zolpidem for the last 5. When I go through a real bad patch of not sleeping, night nurse tends to help.

Yes, my CPAP machine even comes on holiday with us! Its the size of a shoebox, so not too much of a problem.

Steams, you could go herbal and try valerian. It's available in health stores in capsules, you just take one or two before bedtime. I know a few people that have had some success with these.

Cheers mate, think I'm gonna try a lump hammer between the eyes

Jesus Christ mate,

This is bloody awful - I've dispatched the missus, with instructions to to tell you about her weekends shopping plans. I'll give you five minutes...

Just a thought, maybe the problem isn't the fact you can't get to sleep - maybe its the fact your life is too stressful and/or you don't have a release for your stress etc. Sleep deprivation might be the symptom, but not the cause.. Have you considered you may need to make some lifestyle changes (more exercise, less time at work etc)?

If all else fails, ask Sussex Stu if you can smell his hanky, I've heard many things about his 'magic' hankies!
