Alternator poltergiest !!!

Very strange this.

50% of start ups, the volts read 10.5 on charge while in motion. (i've the extra guages in ctr console added!)

The other 50% of start ups & runs 13/14 volts going back to battery as is right.

Is it a brush problem - alternator fubar! or is there a resistance test i can do on a hot or cold alternator to give another reason?

It doesn't matter hot start or cold it seams only to charge 50% of the time, - if it diddn't work i'd buy another one simple.

Any ideas, buddies.

Funny you should mention that - a mate at the gym was also having a similar problem with his Z and found the the power lead was comming loose from the linking connector.

If that makes any sense.

i had a similar prob at crimbo and it was the big wire coming out of the bak of the alternator that had corroded off and was some times conected and some times not

Many thanks - if it was bushes gone, it would have GONE! but its only done 30k so i was a bit suspect.

Im finding the more I piss about under the bonnet the more little nuts and bolts Im finding have worked loose - the problem of loose connections to the alternator happened to my Toyota Townace and it burned the regulator out frown.gif

Check em to see if they are loose and nip em up I say smile.gif

Checked all i can - all seems ok. But where is the regulator? on (alt) or lurking behind an inner wing etc ???

A pic would do fine ;-)

the regulator is inside the alternator..not much to check, unless you disassemble the alt.
