Hallo all you paintwork gurus - here's a couple for you.

The success with repainting my wiper arms (paint has stayed on for two whole weeks now wink.gif) has gone to my head and I am now looking at fettling a couple of other bits.

This panel between the bonnet and the windscreen

windscreenpanel.jpg

is it easier to take off and paint or to mask and paint while on the car. It seems you just have to remove the wipers and undo a few screws but is it really that simple?

Secondly, this front spoiler

frontspoiler.jpg

I was going to wave a bit of wet and dry at this then grey primer then Nissan silver from Halfords. But I noticed the surface is textured - do I need a special paint? Will the emory ruin the texture?

This lot is about my limit - any proper paint, I shall leave to proper painters!

Thanks, all smile.gif

Hi Gio I removed the same panels you mentioned and painted them with straight matt black paint having only slightly rubbed them down with 1200 grit paper (very fine) but you will need to wipe down with a tack rag after to remove any remains of grease etc, the passenger side removes easily but the drivers side requires the wiper arms removal and mine were solid and I ended up needin a puller to get them off!! Paint is still okay 6 months on.

Gio,

I would advise using a satin finish paint on the pieces around the wipers, make sure you key the surface and degrease then use an acrylic based car paint - Harrys do one.

As for the bit on the front bib, I just degreased mine and blew it in with a can of paint from Harrys. But as yours is silver, you will need to use a laquer coat over the top of the base silver.

Don't worry about getting it shinny, just use a good quality polish to buff the paint up. Do not try and spray the flat areas, it will look awful. smile.gif

Jeff TT & TT Tim - thanks for the info.

Time for a really, really dumb question - Harry = Halfords?

Hillmans, I know. Ditto Mandelas. But Harry is new to me (told u I was dull).

Woooow!!!

come on guys your using halfords paint on your baby!

go to your nearist brown brothers or some PRO auto colour suplier thay will put correct colour mixed paint in to an aerosol can for you and also mix plastisizer into it for the plastics. they will also do the lacquer to DO IT ONCE DO IT RIGHT!!!

YOU WILL NEED 1200 GRADE w/d and some cutting compound that meens no polish in it (ie t cut)

how do i know this because i work 4 ICI Autocolour

Regards Allan

Allan, for what Gio is on about IMHO that is overkill!

Yep I agree BB is better quality but it is obvious Gio hasn't done anything like this before.

As for t-cut, Hmmm Amonia, lets watch the laquer coat discolour oh and refinishers tip - Brasso is better!

Price is a major difference too, probabally get all the stuff from Halfords for £10 as opposed to £35 from Brown Bros. Oh and don't forget that BB aren't meant to see refinishing products to the public, and yes I do have a trade card!

Gio, what Allan says is right, if that's the route you want to go. depends on how precious you want to be.

Allan me old m8y - I'm only thinking of doing the low part (the textured bit below the bumper) of the spoiler and the matt black panel (oh, alright then satin black). Oh and possibly the black gloss metal domes on the targa tops (cos mine are now gloss and rust).

I shall leave proper paint to those more qualified.

Tim - actually I have done this before which is why I know my limits! biggrin.gif

Sorry Gio, no offence meant biggrin.gif

Tim - none taken - no need for apology but what a kind thought biggrin.gif Actually if you had seen any of my so-called "paintwork" it would appear exactly as if I hadn't done it before wink.gif

That's why I steer away from anything that isn't so simple a one-eyed blind gorilla could do it! LOL

I ment dont use tcut as the additives do fresh paintwork the power of good NOT! best use propper cutting compound and im sure jo public is sold paint from any supplier

  • Author

Thanks Allan, Tim - think I've got it now! biggrin.gif Gio

Price for an arosol can from a Max Mayer supplier should b around 14 squid mixed to your paint code recipe (found on yer vin plate)Gio your silver name is Platnium silver mist but u should still get plastisizer mix for any flexable plastics ie spoilers (can get some proper tec info from one of the training guys from work if you go down this path.

bet yer well confused now!!!!

Ding (sound of penny dropping at long last)

Allan, I just fiddled with the front spoiler bit I was going to paint. Of course - it's flexible which is why you keep mentioning plasticisers (doh).

Does this mean I need to get special primer mixed up, plus special silver paint plus lacquer all with the right amount of extra added placcy stuff?

all i can say is you guys are nuts aerosols will not work especially silver the plastic wiper trim needs to be degreased first then a coat of adhesion aid put on before any colour or you risk it all peeling off again especially if you use a pressure washer if you like for a one off bring the car to me ill paint front spoiler and black trim £50 bargin and you wont ruin your baby

cheers mark

Hi mark a - yes you're right we're nuts. (Well, I am - can't speak for the others).

If you're only in Weston, why not come and join us on the 27th? (see events thread - Slough).

Cheers - Gio
