Exhaust upf*ck - what bits next? Mongoose or standard?

Ok lads and ladesses, bear with me on this one. Last year, before I found the fount of all wisdom that is this forum, Mr Mandela told me my exhaust was blowing and needed a new bit. OK, I said, fix it. (yeah, OK but please remember that the most complicated exhaust I had ever paid for before with my own money was probably the one on my MG Midget)

Now I find that the bit replaced was only the centre section ("Centre exhaust tube assembly" on page FE-4 of the manual).

Now I find my rear mufflers need replacing as well.

What should I do?

1) find someone else who has standard rear mufflers surplus to requirements and throw beer at them (thanks for the tip Jack)

2) offer the centre assembly (9 months old) for sale and replace both centre and rear with a cat-back Mongoose?

3) replace the rear mufflers only with a stainless steel unbranded but with a good rep. Which means that the centre section will go at some time in the future. (how long would you expect?)

Looking at the history on my car, the exhaust has been replaced 3 times with a Nissan one, and have only lasted 2-3 years. At £300+ each time thats not funny. The last change was a Mongoose in early 2000 and has lasted the longest. I was under the car a few days ago and there is not 1 bit where its erroded.

Stuart it is SS so how can it???

Hi Gio,

That's bad luck mate! Here is my reasoning on the subject:

IF you can afford £300 - £600 for a new stainless steel cat-back exhaust then I'd certainly go that route. Mongoose, Scorpion, Blitz, etc., they all do top quality bits of kit. If I had the money I'd go for a B&B Triflo exhaust but they are custom made in the USA and including shipping will set you back an obscene £1000+

If you want to retain the stock setup, then I'd replace everything between the centre section and the exhaust tips. I know of two Zeds which are close to being dismantled and could make some inquiries as to what type of exhaust is on them and in what condition. Just let me know.

Least prefered route: Nelson ... for obvious reasons.

Just my 2p worth, at the end of the day you need to decide what you want and how far you want your pennies to stretch!

Take it easy mate,

Danny

Exactly. Hehehehe biggrin.gif

Its only SS coated isnt? So if you get a few nasty knocks on it, it could remove the SS and expose the NSS, and when mixed with the H2O and the O the NSS becomes R!

Hehehehe. Im in a silly mood.

No seriously. My car has had 5 exhaust the original, 3 Nissan replacments and the Mongoose. The Nissan's dont seem to last. If you can afford it, get a Mongoose.

Stuart

come on only a millionair biggrin.gif has a mild steel system, now bite the bullet and get a s/steel and only buy it once!! save for it and get it right first time, do it right do it once.

ps check out them lamps cos i cant see the right type to order

Thanks for the tips guys - I suppose I need to get used to leaving the wallet open in the car! (Still, my old man used to have a yacht which he described as "a hole in the ocean into which you throw all your money")

Sounds like a Mongoose it is then.
