rear axle oil seal

Has anyone had the pleasure of replacing a rear axle oil seal ? as mine is leaking. i am a nissan technician and acording to the manual, the collapsable spacer in the diff has to be replaced , to do this means complete overhaul of diff assy. is there a shortcut where as a can still have correct preload on tightening input flange nut back up ?????? the sun is out and i don't fancy the car offroad whilst i rebuild axle !!!!!!!!!!!!!

F*ck me, don't take this personally but you're a Nissan guy and you have to ask us !?!?!?!

I think this probably demonstates the lack of commitment that Nissan show for our cars. I would have expected you to be able to call Guru Central or something and they would tell you all the short cuts. frown.gif

Steve,

If it's just one of the rear axle seals then they're easy to change.

If its the seal on the 'input' shaft (prop shaft) then yes, unfortunatly complete disassembly is required.

I have replaced the input shaft seal with the diff in place.

Of course I could not guarantee the correct preload but it worked fine anyway...

2 years later when I removed the diff, I could not achieve the define preload, no matter how hard I tightened the flange bolt.

Interesting...
