Now then, firstly who prefers matte black on a zed...

Secondly, if you were to spray your zed matte black, would you add a coat of lacquer for protection??

Featured Replies

Personally, I love a nice matte finish.

But wouldn't a coat of lacquer defeat the object a little? Wouldn't it give it a bit of shine? Then again, it might stop the paint looking all marked and untidy after a few weeks. I don't really have much experience with matte surfaces, but I would have thought they would pick up grease and stuff? I know the BMW matte paints are very difficult to look after.

It would still look bad ass though, but you'd have to get the right wheels to set it off.

Matt black on a track zed yes, road zed no. Professional satin on road zed, definately. Rattle can matt with easy repair (or alternately cover with decal). Clear laquer on pucker paint job I would say is essential otherwise it'll mean a lot of trips to the paint shop for stone chips

Just my views

Do it in vinyl, mate - sorry, that should be vinyl matte, mate :D

Here's his whole thread of how he did it

Amazing and, if done well, very striking. (plus, being vinyl, you can get rid of it when you sell / change your mind)

Don't know if this is the same guy

Gio im appreciating that Zed very much!!

I new you'd agree leo - seem to be on the same wave length :taz:

I think the matte colour is unique and gives the zed a sleek look, very smooth and menacing!!! My zed is currently nice glossy black, but needs a number of panels respraying, so i'm 70% decided on respraying matte black...

...on a second note, but perhaps more importantly, if i was to get a full respray done professionally i would be constantly paranoid about idiots scratching it. However a decent finish off matte can be done with spray cans and is easily repairable so i would never be worried about idiots!!

I previously resprayed my prelude matte black and didn't add a coat of lacquer, but i was wondering whether a coat of lacquer would give it a professional look?? I'll experiment and show pics of both......

How did the paint last on the prelude? Did it keep a nice finish? The thing is though, the amount of washing and polishing my car gets, I'd be worried about it getting buffed into a gloss finish after a few weeks!!

Its a good point about the vinyl wrap - it does mean that if you don't like it / change your mind you can revert back to your original paint scheme. It can cost more than a respray though..

Tell me more about this vinyl wrap malarky!! I'd never heard of it until i saw somebody do it on her a few months ago. Looks like a good finish... but how dificult is it to apply??

The finish on my prelude stayed well for the rest of the year that i owned it. I did prepare the metal well before spraying and used primer. But i did not polish it, so i'm not sure whether polishing would eventually give it a shine.

From what I've seen of vinyl wrapping its a very skilled affair. You could do it yourself, but I think it would be best to leave it to the professionals. Its a bit like window tinting - if its done on the cheap, it will look cheap. The last thing you want is creases or stretch marks.

The thing about vinyl wrapping though is you can have any image you like printed on it. You could go for a full carbon look! Ok, I think people would guess your car wasn't really carbon fibre, but it would still look cool!

I think the only draw back other than cost is, that the front bumper will be showing signs of wear after 12 months of stone chips etc - it is only vinyl afterall. But you could get individual panels replaced. I first read about it in evo magazine - a chap called David Yu had his GTR wrapped in purple. Presumably to make it look more like his purple helmeted warrior..

Looked shite in purple, but with a little taste it would work on any car.

As stated above, get the pro`s to do it !!

Imagine how this would look, covered in wee bubbles etc ?

Alan.

Just to let you know that if you coat the black with lacquer for protection, you will end up with a gloss/shiney black car. There are special matt/satin proffesional paints on the market that are more resistant to chip etc. Something else to take in to consideration is that you will have to be careful washing and cleaning the car. If you need to remove insects/marks etc, you could actually polish the matt paint surface away as you rub/polish. This is the hardest paint to maintain looking good. A slight brush up against a hedge or something and you will be left with a nice 'chalky' mark.

Vinyl seems like a safer option.

I dont really have the funds to pay for someone to do the vinyl so may have to resort to the old spray cans. I'll take my time on it to ensure its a decent job.

Cheers for the advice Osty, i'll sack off the lacquer then.

That chrome vinyl finish looks immense on the you tube vid - would love it1!

Not nice.
