I have an intermittent problem with the right hand sensor here. (its on the water pump in or outlet for those that can't picture it)

If i touch or move it (the centre spins inside the mount) then when the engine is running, the electric fan is on constantly, regardless of temperature. (Like now)

It stops at some completely random time, a few hours later, or the next day.

So, my guess is that this sensor is knackered, no problem, i'll sort that out on Monday.

But, is it purely connected to the electric fan, or is it also an ECU input too ?

It seems to me that the left hand sensor would be the ECU and gauge sensor, based on the connector type being the same as the TPS, MAS, etc

Also, i could not get my stock intake box out today, which really peeved me :( as i couldn't put the k&n on that i have (thanks Warren)

Craig,

The left hand sensor is the important one and sends information to the ecu.

The ecu will adjust fuelling and ignition timing based on the information it receives so it's best to replace it quickly.

yeah, i figured that the left was the important one from the connector type, and i think that one is okay.

Hopefully the right hand one is purely for the fan control and will be okay until i get one...

You can just about make out on the pic that some previous 'mechanic' has sealed the right hand sensor with gunk !!

oh well, off to wembley today, so if i get stuck in traffic, at least i know the car wont overheat :)

Craig,

Steve & I had problems as well removing my stock air boxes. We ended up with a bit of precision hacksaw action. I may well be free next Sunday if you want a hand.

Dave,

Yeah, that would be great. I will be here, i'll have the kids too, as i'm on holiday the following week.

Come on down :)

Do you think we might get them off without to much damage though ?

Cheers,

Craig.

Okay guys,

well, the right hand sensor that i was worried about, although it twists inside it's housing, is working okay, and all it does is feed the tmeperature gauge on the dash.

So it's just coincidental that if i touch or move it the fan comes on.

The fan is controlled from the left hand one, which is the one that feeds the ECU, which we all established :)

Once the mechanic had identified that for me, i forgot to go back into the parts dept to get a price for the ECU sensor.. doh!

Oh well, i'll do it tomorrow.

Steve, do you know what sort of symptoms i would be getting if the ECU coolant sensor was intermittently dodgy ?

Do these sound likely ?

strange idle speeds when starting warm,

occasional reluctance to drop idle down when warmed up,

occasional flat spot under acceleration ?

I guess if the ECU is reading incorrect temperatures, then the it will be doing all kinds of fuel/air changes to compensate ?

Craig,

Damage is not great - in fact Bill has fitted my old airboxes into his 2 seater - it's just the brackets which need the hacksaw.

Hopefully see you Sunday - will sort nearer the time.

Dave

The left hand sensor feeding the ECU mainly provides data to regulate the air/fuel mixture. Its just to provide extra fuel while the car is warming up. If the sensor is faulty then there will be noticable symtoms when the engine is warm. A faulty sensor or break in connection will make the engine run too rich because it thinks the engine is still in cold! They are prone to faults. The right hand sensor is only for the temp gauge on the dash.
