Well, i have to say i'm falling out of love at the moment...

She's running a bit strangly at the moment, let me try and explain what's happening:

First: The other day i was driving home, booted it a bit on a straight, then went back to normal driving. She started to shudder a bit and felt like she was misfiring, then cut out.

I pulled over, started her up and she fired up first time so drove back home, every now and then she felt like the power was retarded, and i had to rev the engine a bit as it felt as if it would cut out again.

I swapped out the oil and it was dirty black and replaced with fully synthetic 5w40.

I started her up again today to see how she was running, and she sat on the driveway quite happy ticking over at just under 1k. I took her up and down the ringroad where i live for about 5 or 10 mins, varying my driving from gentle to a bit harder (no real booting it though) evrything seemed fine and i thought that all was good... untill, again the power felt a bit retarded, she felt as if she was misfiring and she backfired a few times. I was behind someone driving quite slowly and i had to press the clutch down and rev a bit higher as it felt that if i left it in 3rd running at 1.5-2k revs that she would cut out... it was a bit juddery and felt as if there was a lack of fuel if that makes sense?

Just a bit of backround info... she has been a bit noisy of late with a tickety tick type sound when at idle, which people seem to think might be sticky lifters. I have recently had a manual conversion done, which seems to be fine, with no gearbox issues, and i have decatted.

I did a quick check on the connectors that i could easily get to, and they all seem to be in place ok...

Any ideas people? I just want to enjoy my car really, It was off the road all winter and having had her back only for a short time I am gutted that she's not quite right. The only people i would trust to do any work on her are miles away from where i live, and with her not running properly i wouldn't want to drive her there anyway.

Help please.

I tried disconnecting the maf and reconnecting, seems to be fine there with regards to there being no moisture in there, no corroding or crap around teh connectors.

firstly check ecu codes to see if there are any errors.

clean injector connectors,

test with known good maf and ptu

As above, seriously sounds like an electrical issue. Have you tested for a spark on coil packs, also are your injectors firing as they should?

Its a 1990 car so assume its a series 1 PTU... not sure bout injectors to be honest, I did the old screwdriver trick to see if they were clicking away, but couldn't really tell to be honest.

ecu diagnostics check i guess... any tips on how to do it or shall i just do a quick search for how to do this?

Cheers guys, i appreciate the help

injector connector pins furr up with green shit , take off injector connector carefully and check if green, if it is clean then replace connector, repeat 6 times

you will know if you can hear the clicking from the injectors, but to me sounds like early PTU failure. more than likely if its the same PTU from when you brought it round mine, then its a S1 and would be a good idea to upgrade it anyway.

You need a looong screw driver, or any long metal bar to be honest thats small enough to get on the cap of the injector but long enough to get your ear on. place the end on the cap, and stick your ear on the end, you will definitely hear a clicking sound. but doesnt sound like injector to me.

When i had accidentally plugged my S1 PTU at a strange angle, she idled fine. drove fine. the moment you put your foot down. felt like the car was attached to an elastic band and had a few big loud pops out of the exhaust. very hesitant and then died. restarted worked fine until trying to boot it.

Sounds about right mate. It is behaving as you describe. How much for a PTU? and what series should i be going for, also how hard to swap?

Love the new sig by the way Ian!

Your best bet would be to get hold of Jeff for a new S2 ptu, if it needs changing, then dont bother with a S1, it should have a harness already, pretty simple to change, remove both turbo pipes and then using a ratchet spanner (8mm iirc) undo the 4 bolts holding it to the cam belt cover. (bottom one is the worst as the top radiator pipe is blocking it if using a ratchet and 8mm socket) then take the metal retaining clips off and put somewhere safe.

get your new PTU and plug in, if its the S2 with the harness, just plug and play to be honest. then you can either remount it where it came from and tuck the extra wire somewhere neat, or relocate it for easier use.

PS thanks, about time i used one of my cars as a sig lol

Sounds like PTU is dying mate, same as mine was doing, i got a S2 and no problems since :)

Thanks guys, i did a quickcheck ebay.com and all i found were ones going for $160 plus delivery... one guys wanted $80 for delivery!!!

One of our lovely members is being a true gentleman and is popping over on the weekend to sort me out with a working S1 ptu so i can get back in her ASAP, but they are clearly a weak link so I just bought the one with the harness and connectors for when the inevitable happens again.

you will need to use the S2 wiring diagram that graham put up matey, as the looms are different wires colors from the S1's

He sounds like a top bloke.

Shame there aren't more people around like him.

I bet he's handsome - a real ladies man.

Sounds like a talented individual too.

Traveling all that way to help you out. Reminds me of a Mad Max movie.

You are very lucky to know him, that's all I can say.

Wouldnt be you by any chance would it Andy:lol::lol::lol: very subtle

Series one ptu failure is not as common as is made out,ive come across loads of cars still running a series one with no probs, mines 6 years old that i know, could be the same age as the car possibly. Its more than lightly an injector plug has gone green or a coilpack plug making a bad connection. It may just be a dirty connection at the ptu that when disturbed to replace it seems to have cured it,expensive repair for what could have been fixed with some time and patience using sandpaper.
