I've just spent most of the day patching a large hole in my fuel tank filler pipe using Quick Steel. I then got rid of all the rust that I could, then I coated the thing in 3 coats of Hammerite.

The place where the guard was meant to attach to has disintegrated, so I haven't been able to put that back on. When I pulled the guard off there was half a field of soil behind it for some reason.

I suppose a good job done, but I can think of more fun things to do on a Saturday!

I had the same problem, replaced with a good second-hand one, which I rubbed down and coated with black plasticote - I think.

What kind of condition was the area around the filler neck in? I had to cut out a lot of rusty metal and replace :hammer:

Wow! Mine is nowhere near that bad! The filler neck isn't too bad. The worse has been the brackets (which are gone now) that support the pipe and the guard.

I first noticed fuel dripping from the bottom of the bumper, filler side...obviously. It wasn't a lot but was beginning to concern me. I happened to look into the dark filler hole one day and wondered how I hadn't noticed the huge hole to the left at the very beginning of the pipe!! The rest of the pipe had serious surface rust and was on its way to pipe heaven. I'm hoping I've prevented this, or at least slowed it for a good few years.

As for all the soil...me thinks someone has been doing donuts in a field!

just removed mine in the week and mine too has started to rust. mine is a swb but still has the plastic guard and it was full of mud too. corrosion is not to bad for me but some of the brackets are long gone.

i suspect a new one would be the best part of £200
