losing the will to carry on with my zed.......i have changed the standard air filter for a Hks mushroom type one, now the blooxy thing struggles to fire up, has a huge flat spot when i first press the throttle and to top it all off whilst stuck in traffic today it cut out and refused to restart, what do i need to do now to get around this latest in a very very long list of issues ....

thanks

started doing it as soon as i put the airfilter on, no it was not raining..im hoping the bloody thing is running super lean which will explain the issue but i dont know how to do anything about it , im about an inch away from putting a match to it.....

did you disconnect the battery ? reset the ecu and check the maf connector and go from there.

i had the same filter on mine, and never experianced the symptoms you discribe, id check the MAF socket or the maf its self. as already stated the filter isnt wet is it?

mine used to sit very low into the "mouth" of my 99spec front opening, and even in wet weather it didnt cut out or anything, though i did keep my distance from the car infront.

Only time my car stalled was coming off the throttle in winter time, but then take your foot off the clutch and the car would start again? that was about it.

okay all thanks for the advice, ive disconnected the live terminal on the battery, checked all connections to the maf ( no issues apparent here) and will now wait and see if tomorrow brings better news when i connect up and turn the key..

The Fitting an Induction cone filter does not cause the car to run lean, or any of the symptons you mentioned.

Your suffering from a boost/vacumn leak somewhere or there is a problem with the MAF connector.

The Z's electrical wiring can be an issue at this age, the connector terminals become corroded and the wiring fragile. Check the terminals inside the connector, and file any corrosion away (usually green/white).

Check all the clamps are tight after the MAF, and check for any small vacumn pipes that may have become dislodged.

How old is the air filter? Is it damaged in anyway?

Im not a fan of tge foam type, heard of the fiam getting sucked up.

Ive got one on the blue zed..

oh.... any advice on how to find boost or vaccum leaks ( sorry but im an absolute novice) , it just seemed odd that the minute i changed to a cone filter i had the hesitation as described. the maf and all the connections are good, nowt else has been touched. oh and my revs at idle are all over the shop, up at 1500 then down to 1000 etc etc

it sound as though something is confussing the MAF ...as Jim said put the old filter box back on and re test .....look in teh cone filter is there anything there that could protrude into the maf and upset the coil fillement there ?? is the filter blocked in any way ...have you removed all the packing correctly .....take the cone filter off first and try it without the old filter box or cone filter on ...

right then, just reconnected the battery, car fired up straight away, all seemed good, then after 5 mins or so ... turned the car off, went for a restart straight away and it wouldnt, just kept on turning overr and over, so now it seems dead on the drive to boot, does anybody local ish have a version of consult that they would be willing to stick on the bloody thing , or can i tempt anybody local with a an intuitive knowledge of all things zed with fuel and beer money ????

for the boost check just go ask a near by garage and they should do it for about £20 pound as its a super simple procedure. basically they pump the air intake system with air and listen for leaks. your car should hold around 14psi. mine had bad boost leaks and it make the car terrible to drive and really messes up the revs and causes the car to stall alot as it cant hold revs at idle.
