Job Advice

Hey Guys,

Might be a odd subject but wanted some advice from you guys, probably the only forum i can ask for advice regarding this matter lol. I just finished my 2nd year in uni and have got about 6 months to myself. So i am thinking what might be the best job to look out for. Even better does anyone know of any jobs going anywhere near the london area or have any contacts??, would be of great help!!

Cheers!

Permanent job or part time job?

When I was at Uni I made a fortune being a waiter, i won't say how much the tax man might be looking, but it took me a good few years in employment to achieve the same (taxable) income!

What's your degree going to be in? What jobs have you had previously (part time etc). What do you enjoy doing, most importantly!

My daughter is coming back from Uni in London and needs to get a job here! :)

Hope she gets a good job!!

Bar work maybe a good start. Depends if you want to do 'late' hours. A friend of mine just did voluntary work for a few weeks and found paid work then.

Arts and animations eh? Nice........

Might be worth looking into that, check out reeds or something i guess. I have no problems working late hour bored and sitting at home currently lol. You can only go out so much!

Yeah hope to make it into pixar one day :D

Mate, before I started working on a permanent basis I must have had a least a dozen jobs. Some were great, others not so great. Mostly pretty low paid though (this was before minimum wage!).

Delivery driving is something just about anyone with a licence can do. The pay is pretty reasonable, but I wouldn't recommend it - its way to stressful with all those Bee Em drivers darn sarf!

I like working outside, so I did a lot of farm work too, but not everyone is suited to working long hours every week just for peanuts..

I also worked in a microwave meal factory after finishing uni (really), which wasn't as bad as what I imagined - the craic was what made the job worth doing!

Try and avoid work agencies, but these days its hard to do that - best thing you can do is pop down the local job centre and see what floats your boat. Just don't expect too much.

If I were you, I'd defo go for the waitering - find a quality restaurant with a high table turnover and turn the charm upto max. I nearly failed my uni course I was living the high life so much!

i thought about posting my cv on here and asking you guys for advice before myself actually. being 25 this year a career is really required. its touigh out there atm for everyone. getting started on the ladder is just stupid. I would love to earn even 20k a year.

Yeah that does sound about right and its very hard to get into jobs. well i am just looking for anything really but in your case i guess its about what you want to do specifically.

thats the hard thing really. i just dont know. i got made redundant about two years ago, and thought it would be the ideal time to get the state to help me understand what im eligable to do and what is out there. but i was really disappointed with the way the job centre handled my case. they just wanna get you working at mc ds, not interested in helping you progress. thats not right imo. they should be helping us find a proper job not just throwing us at the first one that will take us for minium wage. even looking on teh job sites and local papers throws up littl;e in the way of real work. i earn about 14k a year atm with some perks, company van etc. i dont have toomany out goings these days, but i would love to get a proper job. i just dont even know where to start, works pretty thin on the groud here aswel. well real jobs wise, plently of hotel jobs and resaurant jobs etc etc tourist trade and the like but its all poorly paid. i was working as an apprentice fabricator before i was made redundant but finding work in that field is tough atm, plus after reviewing the health issues i was put off the job. ive worked in retail at low level management a few times earning about what i earn now, but god i hate customers in shops! i did look into joing the police or the ambulance service but theyre on massive cutbacks and not taking people on really. im up for anything really aslong as it pays well, isnt so boring you go insane and doesnt involve checkouts lol. or 4 years of training at a silly wage rate.

i have 4 a levels, and passed all my gcses at at least a c apart from french which i got an e lol whoops. i could have gone to uni but opted not to as i didnt trust myself not to party too hard and i didnt think it would actually give me a better chance, it certainly hasnt helped my mates.

Well the main problem is that most companies now recruit internally or through recommendations. So i think unless you have someone who can recommend you it is very hard to get a job. So any ceo or managers on the forums??? ;)

There's no easy way to say this guys, life sucks sometimes.

Way too many people go to uni these days expecting to walk straight into a 25k a year job. The reality is it just doesn't happen. If you've got no work experience and an unproven track record, then employers are naturally going to be wary. There's enough people WITH experience looking for jobs, so the odds are stacked against you.

After uni I spent 6 months in Sunny Scunny working in a microwave meal factory unitl I had saved up a deposit to rent a house in Leeds.

I then did 6 months of door to door sales working for a pyramid sales company, working on 100% commission :death:

Then I spent 18 months working in call centres for BG - truly the most demoralising job ever - but after 12 months I was promoted into a specialist team and out of the general call centre, which was a lot better.

Then I got a opportunity to be a tug skipper (not sea based, but inland waters) :boat:. Working for the same company I got involved with marine construction :hammer:. Then I was made into a charge-hand, then a foreman and eventually (after 8 years) into site manager/contracts manager :red_indian:.

I'm not trying to bore you to death or anything, but my point is - I didn't go to Uni to get any of these jobs. I didn't need to go to Uni to get any of these jobs. I just did whatever I had to, to pay the bills and earn a crust. It wasn't what I wanted to do - I wanted to be a motoring journalist (car mags etc), but the opportunity never came up, why - cos I had no freakin experience. Which is frustrating as hell when you've just spent 16yrs of your life trying to get an education :smartass:

So, be prepared to do whatever it takes - eventually an opportunity will present itself.

Do you really need a paying job? If not have you thought about doing volunter work for a company in your feild that your training in? Will look really good on your cv and may help you get a job with them in the future once your qualified. And the reason there are no jobs IMHO is because this country has sold out to the lowest bidder and gone from being the world leaders in manufater and industy to nothing other than shops and hotels! Best move to china as they have taken all are jobs because they have cheaper labour!

Being in the right place definitely helps..

I'd get out of Dorset if I wanted to increase my opportunities for employment. Even if I had to sleep in a cardboard box for a bit. The south east is full of opportunities, unfortunately its also full of people from the south east too :tt2:

Volunteer work/work experience will pay dividends down the line as ellodave rightly says - infact, it could very well be the difference between getting a job or not.. But I appreciate that very few people can afford to work for free.
