So its a semi with a 5 speed box?

Kinda. I'ts definitely a manual in that you change gear manually either with gearstick or paddles. Also has auto mode. The M3 has a 6 speed version available called the SMG.

I'm pretty certain that it has a clutch which auto actuates when you change gear - same as a truck or bus!!! I think it's something like a 200 milli-second gearchange in sport mode.

So is it like the mitsubishi triptroinc then.

Its a manual gearbox but with a little man inside it changung gear for you..

Or a computer thingy. 100% manual box tho..

Ive got an M3 SMG.

Sorry, don't know. Nice box though.

yeah i use to like the triptroinc. was like a rally car. quick flick up or down depening on what gear you want

dosnt have flappy padles though lol!!

SSG is a more basic version of SMG, basically the same idea but a cheaper varient for the 325i and 330i models rather than the full fat SMG II 6 speed which was in the M3 of that age.

Basically its a manual gearbox, of which the clutch is automatic. The gearbox is robotised and so changes gear for you, they are normally used manually, i.e you tell it when to change gear for you but there is an automatic mode.

Totally different to an automatic gearbox, this tiptronic shite that people harp on about on mitsis is nothing new and was on BMW's at a similar age, known as steptronic (they also have AGS progressive driving learning as well which notices continuous braking and realises your on a hill to save the brakes, jolly nice of it. (Again been around since 94..) Be wary of people trying to tell you an automatic version (some have buttons, my dads 745i does) is an SMG/SSG.

Personally I would have a proper automatic (nice and smooth and very reliable in a BMW I have to say) or a proper manual. Problem with the SSG/SMG cool as it is, it does feel like maureen has got hold of the gearbox at times, especially around town!

anyone here have one? any good?

The wife has a factory AC Schnitzer converted 330ci cabriolet which is very well balanced car with superb road holding and with the 6 speed manual gearbox ( highly reccomended) has the torque range to push it along very nicely around the twisty country lanes where we live, easily accomodates 4 adults and typical of factory upgrade suspension never feels overly harsh and the tyres some how never come in to contact with the wheel arches!!

Remember thougj, you cant turn the traction off in a 330, you caj in an m3 though:)

Yes you can, press the dsc button when you first start up and it is 50% disconnected, press and hold when running for the full 100% disengagement. ( dont tell Lynda though!)
