I have a log cabin being built out the back, it is 8.5M X 4M with a gym and hot tub going out there.

I just got a quote to do the foundations it will require digger hire for one day and because it will hold a hot tub they suggested using a 9 inch reinforced slab with a damp proof sheet with an expansion joint in it. The ground is fairly level they dont need to skip anything and the cement mixer can get about 10-12 metres away.

2 guys for 2 days and they want £2800, now im sure every time some fecker comes out here and looks at my house the prices double. It does really piss me off that everytime I get a quote I think they assume its time to kill the fatted calf.

They are meant to be starting Tuesday but I want to check I am not being taken for a mug here. if you think the price is about right then fine no problem, I just think it is expensive for what it is after thinking about it.

I should just add when I said frack me that is a lot of money he said it was the cost of cement as with nothing else that was around £16-1800

Please help!

Ive done a bit of research and come up with this=Ready mix lorries are around £70-£90 cubic meter, your area is 7.3m cubed so cement should be no more than say £800. Digger say £150 for the day, so you can see where this is going lol

Found one site where they got 6m cubed for £167 so i would get a few quotes yourself Martin, could save yourself a bundle

Ouch thats a lot of wonga Martin!!!we use concrete all the time and it does differ from region to region, but on average it costs approx £100 a cube, the more you get the cheaper it becomes, I`ve paid as low as £75 a cube and upto £130 for the barrow mix where the lads barrow the concrete in wheel barrows, If i was pricing that job (obviously ive not seen it) but it should be more like £1800 materials and labour mate

Just a thought?, you say the ground is fairly level, is the slab being built out of the ground? or is it ground level?? I was wondering where would the 7/8 mtrs cubed of removed soil/sand be put if nothing need skipping

They are dumping the dirt around 15 yards away in my woodland as I have a bit of land that needs filling up so no need to skip anything. it does seem expensive to me, im sure they will go ape when I call them to cancel everything Tuesday but im not being ripped off... im sick of people coming out here to try and take advantage so i am going to get a few more quotes.

ok bud, ALWAYS!! get at least 3 quotes then you know your not getting ripped, And if i was pricing a job at your beautiful house then you would pay the same as the person who lives in a 1 bed flat, some builders are stupid and dont think about doing a good reasonable priced job and then they would get called back again for more work if it came up!:thumbup1:

I told them I dont want it doing Tuesday, he is not very happy but knowing that you might have been taken for a load of extra cash is a bad feeling... I hate being taken advantage of like this and having my doubts i cant just hand over £2800 without more quotes.

Wise decision mate, as said, get more quotes, i think you will be surprised in the differences lol

2 guys for 2 days?

Feck me, I've laid a slab 3 times that volume in just one day. And I had to carry the concrete in my pockets over 100m of hot coals :devil2:

Are they putting in any re-bar? and how big is the hot tub? Surely you want the hot tub sunken into the floor don't you? If the quote includes setting a recess for the hot tub then the price is probably quite fair..

If you can wait til mid June I'll come and do it for free, providing I get the keys to your motor for a bit!

Cheers

dont sink the hot tub into the floor... unless you have the flexible one piece pipework that returns to a seperate allocated filter area. will be far easier to maintain and repair WHEN it goes wrong that way. i hate working on hot tubs that you end up digging up the concrete to get to a poorly joined pipe or split pipe that someone else laid without thinking about how you would access it.
