Slightly before my time but not by much!!!.... i had a BMX and Raleigh Wildcat as a nipper

http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/1974-genuine-raleigh-chopper-mk-2-newunrestored/77318026

I wish I still had mine,so who all had one then?

Oh what a blast from the past, I had an orange Mk1 with the different gear knob and the rear frame was different where it met the rear axle which led to many kids cracking their head on the tarmac when the front wheel went up.

On the Mk ll the handlebars where fixed at the head but the MK l you could undo them and rotate them right back and with that earlier frame design meant you basically rode around on the back wheel most of the time!! but then when your 13 yrs old thats cool!!!

One thing I can remember is the price in 1973 was £39.99!!! bugged my Dad for months to get one and when I did I was up at 6.00am riding around checking myself out in the shop windows.....sad or what? not really do the same in my zed now!

Having a Raleigh Chopper gave you instant membership to the cool kids club where I lived.

I bet you put t cards held on with clothes pegs in the spokes to make a motor sound or was that just me.

Wow, a real blast from the past, I had a racing bike, but all my mates had Choppers....At £1,700, it's more than I paid for my Z.......lol

No not just you think we all did that, made a bloody racket but that was the point...I think.

I'll own up to this with a plastic drinks carton!!

Were they all red,i think i recall seeing another colour?

I the 1st ones were mostly orange, but there were red and yellow and not sure they didnt eventually do black?

Loads of colours, have seen on the net that there was a few special editions like the black one with metaflake paint, cannot remember them though.

Great old bike! Just bend the old bit of card to the spokes and you had a scrambler sound lol

On another note, anyone remember the bikes that came out that were all white, I think, and looked a bit futuristic for 80's bike.

I remember me and my mates spending hours and hours on our bikes, nowdays all kids want is ps3's laptops etc and dont leave their rooms, shame.

Ha Ha all the old hands owning up to having one I remember having my first lights on mine the front light was connected to a dynamo so the faster you could paddal the brighter the light

And twice as hard to pedal when the dyno was against the tyre lol

Jeez yes remember them, trouble was when you got to a junction it went off!

Agree entirely me and my mates were practically glued to our bikes in the Summer holidays.....oh remember Summer holidays........................

And twice as hard to pedal when the dyno was against the tyre lol

Up hill was hard enough on a Chopper with out any extra load.

Jeff

What did all Raleigh Chopper kids look forward to? ............ a downhill bit .

Jeff

Yep, orange Raleigh Chopper. That, plus downhill in Richmond Park and tiny front wheel led to first ever (but not the last) over-the-bars (or in this case, through) and chin landing. :ouch:

Gio you so right about the tiny front wheel been responsible for the often down hill terror, "over the handle bars" now thats a memory jogger for sure, but was all part if been a kid,get up dust your self off, make sure your mates didn`t see that tear in your eye and get back on, nowadays the air ambulance would be scrambled.:headvswal

Had the 5 speed custom in purple untill I went to blow the rear tyre up at the garage!-must have got to about 100psi when it blew me clean across the road!!:hammer:-got home and got me mums Tablespoons out to change the tyre and BANG!-the front blew off!

The old fella drove a skip wagon then and when he came home he went barmy and chucked the Chopper in the back!-I was gutted!..................

Happy times!:tooth:

Still preferred the Grifter tho'-tough little bike that!
