coolant bottle !

hey guys, a quick question, on the coolant bottle thats behind the wheelarch panel there is a pipe connected to the bottom of the bottle, at the top of the bottle there is a small hole, should this also have a pipe on it?. cheers.

There should be a pipe connected to the underside of the cap. You put your finger over the hole and lift the cap off - then it shows you the level of water in the bottle.

Well, stap me vitals, so that's what the damn pipe is for! On my 1989 J import, this used to be just a captive cap, then when that got broken, I got a new cap which was yellow and this damn floppy pipe on it with no discernable use.

Except you just discerned it! Ta smile.gif

I think the expansion tank is open to the atmosphere so the top hole has no tube. At least there isn't on mine. Bottom hole has a tube that runs to the rad by the rad cap. This tube is opened/closed by the action of the rad cap pressure spring. Water level in tank needs to be above the lower tube.

A modicum of confusion, probably my fault. The coolant tank has a yellow cap with a dipstick type jobbie for checking the level. Like this, although the cap is off the top of the pic :- picture_070.jpg

The windy washer tank has the cap with a hole and tube :- picture_072.jpg
