As above i have the blue wire that controls the aerial to make it go up and down plugged in and the aerial works fine however the signal is crap. The aerial is plugged in as normal but there is also a grey wire with a connector on the end attached to it do i need to stick this anywhere?

Or is it just the area im in i wouldnt think it should be that bad i can hardly get radio one its all fuzzy and crackly

you should have the cable that goes into the aerial hole. but you might find there are two. (there is a AM aerial that runs around the back window) and the one for FM, so try both, if still no joy, you will have to remove the drivers side rear plastic boot lining. and check to see if the aerial its self is actually wired up at the aerial  lol

only one of them will fit the standard aerial connection the other one is way too small

ah super cheers so the standard aerial plugs into that as well as the smaller grey one and then that plugs into the stereo?

Yep. The OEM Nissan harness terminates behind the radio with both those plugs. The adapter is to change from the Nissan two aerials to the normal single input. I had a pic somewhere but lost it. Oops.

I'm doing this from memory. I was going to do a write up but lost the bleeding pics. You'll see some of the old threads if you stick diversity into this forum search. It isn't one FM / one AM or two aerials (well it is, but not like that). The Nissan Diversity Aerial used two elements and combined them electrically in the head unit to try and cut down on (IIRC) FM multipath reflections.

according to some quick googling on other zed forums http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=524787&forum=technical&dtSearch=1 it's not to cut down on multipath, but the head unit (if it's got that facility) switches between the two elements (the upright one and the one in the rear window) depending on the best reception.

You can just cut off the one and put a coax connector on the other or just plug in the one that fits. But (as you found) you'll never get as good a result if you don't do it the way Nissan intended - and that means you need the adapter.

If you have a look at the back of the OEM head unit you'll find that there will be two places to plug in the two original leads.
