I have a very old Motorola phone and currently on an O2 monthly sim. Thinking of getting a new smart phone, ideally for web, email and like the idea of some of the apps available, one for translators should I do any traveling.

Is iphone the best, I see alot of HTC phones advertised, also what about monthly costs, any recommendations on phones and packages.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Barry,

Have a quick read of my post a month or so ago ;) http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=146220&highlight=smartphone

Have to say, people were right, I went from a normal phone to a smartphone and would now never go back. Only thing is my Desire is a larger phone than my old one (Nokia 6600 fold) so I still use my old phone when I go out ;)

Vijay

I went from a HTC touch HD to a Iphone, and although i hate apple, i will say one thing, since owning a iphone there is no way ill touch another smart phone. its one of the best there is hands down, and i was very skeptical about getting one. im now on my 2nd and loving everything about it.

I know ill get people say "but this windows phone does this and this and this over the iphone" but i really dont care. its so simple to use, the screen is very responsive and the apps, omg how many? the games are awesome, you can use it as GPS with Tomtom on it, google earth, absolutely loads of cool functions, and the funny thing is, Ive seen the newer smart phones and although they don't have a problem with adobe, like apple does, they are all trying to be the iphone simple as that. half the functions on other smart phones are dumbed down versions of the iphone apps, the iphone pulls it off better though.

Oh and multi touch screen, so you can use two fingers on it at the same time.

Only thing about the iphone though, is battery life. if you have it in the car and are using it as GPS you NEED the incar charger. if you have it using it with blue tooth headset, YOU need to be near your charger.

And unless you jailbreak it, you are married to the app store.

Oh and multi touch screen, so you can use two fingers on it at the same time.

I knew a girl like that once.......... (insert your own joke there!!)

well i have tried the htc's and tbh i wanted to be a bit different from my family and friends etc but i still ended up with an iphone and love it. does EVERYTHING i need it too and more since i have jailbroken it. ahem free apps lol

ive tried them all and by far the iphone is streets ahead of everything on the market and with the massive range of apps nothing is ever going to touch it!! now they have sorted the camera out on the iphone 4 its pretty damn perfect ;)

iPhone. Anyone that owns an alternative Smartphone loves to try and slag it off, but it is the best all-rounder.

Other phone manufacturers bring out a new phone every few months, which a slightly faster processor or a slightly better this or that....but it means nothing. The iPhone has a quality about it that leaves the others feeling cheap and plasticky. It feels great to use and the appstore is immense compared to others.

The only other phone I would consider is the new Dual core LG Optimus 2X (being released in 2 weeks time), which is very impressive spec-wise - Im not sure it does anything better that I'd actually use it for myself, but if you did want the higest spec then this would probably be it.

only problem with Iphone is IIRC the min contract is around £35 unless you buy the phone

Thanks everyone for you advice, anyone know of any good deals on any of these phones? At the moment my sim is O2, never had a problem, but cant see why I cant switch to another provider.

Thanks

iphone all the way!! iphone 5 is reported to be out in june when my contract on my 3GS is up :thumbup1:

It really is so well thought out - everything just works so well on it.

Having said that my girlfriend has just got the Samgung Galaxy - shes not really into gadgets but got this due to costs. Clearly the styling is based on the iphone 4 & it runs android.

She got it because of the price - £20pm for 300 mins, unlimited texts, 250mb data & the phone for free with Vodaphone. Pretty good package for the price!

BTW - check out quidco for new contracts - go through them & get £50 cashback! :)

I use quidco for everything online that I can & have had hundreds of pounds back now!

I have the desire hd,and it is an amazing phone, even though the screen is 4.3 inches it fits in your hand with ease..the only downer would be the monthly cost,,havent seen these less than 35 a month,,unless you went sim free,in which case its about 350 notes.

if you didnt want an iphone, then the standard desire is a great phone, and could get for 25 a month.

Theres also some new htc phones arriving,,the wildfire s,desire s,the 'cha cha',the salsa and the incredible.

im a bit of a htc freak ,,lol

Went with HTC as the iPhone 4 BT is rubbish when it comes to connecting to third party head units, so couldn't be doing with having a headset in the car, something to do with RASP technology?

Anyway after my daughter managed to dunk her HTC twice in water, in as many months and the only thing we replaced was the battery. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the build quality.

Remember weren't HTC were building high end business phones long before Apple came out with the iPhone?

iPhone all the way for me. Had an HTC Touch HD ( for about 5 months) and a Samsung S something or other but that lasted about a week befor I sold it on...yuk yuk yuk.

Have had iPhone 2G and 3G (current) and wouldn't change. Only smartphone that comes close is my other half's Blackberry Torch. If I couldn't have an iPhone I'd have th Torch definitely.

As for deals, if you get an unlocked jailbroken iPhone off eBay, you can use any SIM and PAYG.

Blackberry Torch deal on mobile.co.uk = £23.53/month with cashback comes down to £18/month for unlimited texts, 500mb data, 500mins free calls...worth looking at!

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I couldnt justify the extra cost of the Iphone. So I went with the HTC Desire for 25 p/month with vodafone and going through Quidco get 150 quid cash back :)
