Worn teeth on the ring gear?? It always comes to a rest in the same place virtually hence the wear in one bit of it.

Maybe?

Other possibility is that the Starter has worked loose, very common for the bolts to undo from vibrations and the starters movement usually ends up snapping the top of its mount.

i have literally just changed my starter today. it was the bearings in the starter that were worn. i was worried it was the ring gear too but it was just the starter. ps the part number for a blue print one is adn11255.
