Update on auto box problem

Just been out for another test drive, trying to find fault on auto box. I have noticed that although the box will not change from second to third gear under acceleration, the minuet I release the throttle pedal the box instantly changes to fourth gear, I can then change down to third by switching the over drive off. As soon as I touch the throttle pedal (barely applying any pressure) the box instantly changes back down to second gear. Does this indicate a particular fault?

I would replace the throttle position sensor for a start.

It's old and worn by now anyway.

MAny shifting problems are caused by wrong signal from the TPS.

Make sure to adjust it right afterwards.

Can a worn TPS lead to overfueling and bad fuel consumption as well?

Steve. Mines doing similar, though it wont really selct 3rd at all. Also theres a long and sad list of similar problems.

The online manual (under the big Z in tech stuff) is quite superb for the diagnosis to check Throttle Position Sensors etc. And none of the parts are cheap so alittle diagnostic time might save some of that money I'm guessing you / I need to spend on a new box.

Can you post how you got on by the way cos if there's a cheaper fix...

I was lucky in that AndyP was selling his uprated box at just the right time. Never did solve the problem.

Hope you have more luck than I did.

Steve.

Before I bought AndyP's Auto box I was about to take my car to these people:

http://www.ivanautos.co.uk/

They seemed very Knowledgeable of the Z transmition and not too expensive either. Here is the quote they sent me.

"Prices are as follows, and are subject to any hard part damage.ie if the gearsets

are damaged, then the price of those is on top of the overhaul price".

Overhaul....£500

Torque Convertor £130

Fitting.....£100

VAT.........£127.75

Total.......£857.75

Cooler......£95 fitted + vat

Hope this helps.

Steve.
