Hey Guys,

ย

I just got a few doubts and needed some clarification from the experts here :P. I was told that the auto only has 4 gears and that overdrive is the 4th gear?

ย

Is this true? If so then auto must have really bad MPG at the higher speeds??

yes, the auto does have just 4 gears, but there is also a nifty trick it does. that makes it seem as though it has 5.

MPG is about the same if i remember from a thread we once had discussing this. My auto zed, cruised at 70mph at 2800 revs, which is almost the same as my manual

whats this nifty trick exactly? I mean the top speed must be different for sure cause of the gears?

Im sure at some point jeffTT will be along to let you know. im really not that sure on how it does it, but it does it lol

Ok the auto box is a three speed with overdrive, so effectively 4 speed however it also has torque lock up which is an extra reduction in the torque fluid slip this can be felt as a 5th change.

The ratio`s are not the same between auto and manual 3rd and 3rd in fact when rolling roading an auto it is done in drive with overdrive switched off to maintain a one to one ratio in a manual this is 4th gear, this illustrates the higher gearing on the auto`s part of which is why the turbo`s are designed to spool up differently.

From experience of driving all manner of zeds on a daily basis my view is at motorway speeds the engine is at lower revs in an auto for the same road speed in a manual, this averages out at around the same mpg though in the real world.
