Well.. Went to do my bdc drift licence at llandow today and the engine started knocking during practice :( so I failed like a prat....

Basically i was running relitively low boost 11psi with a puck clutch, shimmed diff and couple that with The r888 Tyres I gave the engine too much with no 'give' so the inevitable happened...

Now iv got 22 days to get the thing up and running for bdc teeside.

So, couple of options,

1 - get another vg30dett and throw that in

2 - get an sr20det convert and tune it to death

3 - rb26dett

4 - rb25dett

tbh iv lost all faith in the ca, vg, rb25 gen engines, they seem to have toffie bottom ends

I'd like to SR the thing, iv had a look at a few conversions and it doesn't look like a particulally difficult job.

Would it be easyier to rb26 it?

Will my clutch and flywheel go on an sr or rb26? I'm aware the box will fit and the mounts might need a fettle also the subframe might need a little cutting.....

Or should I just rebuild this piece of poo? What's involved in an vg bottom end rebuild?

Featured Replies

no offence but did you have the engine fully rebuilt before fitting it?

you take an old engine with wear and then try to do a drift challenge with it and complain when it fails!

vg's are known for the pooling of oil in the heads which starve the bottom end bearings.

what did you do seeing as you were going to use it for drifting to prevent this possibly occuring

baffled sump

larger sump

accusump

last resort extra litre of oil

the engine was previously mine and in 3 years it was trouble free it didnt even drip any oil ever which i was very surprised, it was in top notch condition. however if i were to use vg engine for drifting id seriously consider upgrading for new engine parts ( in any old jap car ) , was always well taken care of by me . shame this happened but imho the 300zx engine is complicated to use for drift .

Ok well, we're gonna take the engine out tomorrow and look at the damage, few people think it might'v thrown a shell where do I get 'epic' engine internals from? Like extra strong shells, forged rods + pistons, bearings etc?

Only place i know in the U.k is smithys place which is now Dta motorsport. From the u.s theres quite a few option, z1 motorsports, concept z , specialty z etc .

I've been ordering quite a few things from concept z and im really happy with how nice they are, also ship items quite fast.

Before you start think "extra strong" don't forget unless the engine you got has been rebuilt before, then everything is 20 years old and if been on raised boost, would have only been time before No. 6 piston went tits up.

Shels/bearings are at that age of being worn now tbh.

All parts except pistons are forged anyways already.

Very limited options for aftermarket shells/bearings which are not actually that much stronger. Rods you have are forged.

Take a Z1 rebuild kit for a 1000 dollars which has new forged pistons/rings/wristpins and rods/caps. While yer there add a new oil pump, Non Turbo Oil squirters for the pistons and Job done!

and a forged engine won't last any better against oil starvation

drifting with r888 tyres?

surely that's like trying to swim in treacle?

could understand having good tyres on the front, but the rear?? Have i missed something here?

and a forged engine won't last any better against oil starvation

Oh deffo mate, our wee sump don't like Oil sloshed to 1 side all the time so that needs addressing no matter what.

^^^^ This, and the SR and Rb26 is no stranger to the same issues.

If I was you, I would source a good known VG and look into either drysumping (expensive but very favourable solution), or look at improving oil return from from the heads to the sump and fit a larger sump (SPL make one) and an Oil Accumulator system, such as Accusump.

right guys, good advice, iv got the engine out, (iv slipped a disc in my spine and now i cant walk! lol! :/

cant see any holes in the engine...

does jeff at zedworld do megga engine rebuilds? if i can take it down to him to build into an epic engine id be happy, if i make the insides strong what do i need to do to sort this oil issue out?

re 888's - she managed a couple of runs with loooooooooads of smoke out of the tyres and on the final 4th gear 100mph corner the engine let go...... unsurprisingly

Zedworld generally don't mate, Jimmer is the main man for rebuilds with a very high good reputation for doing a great job!

Clutch and fly wheel are diffrent to sr and rb engine clutch disc is 250mm on z32 others are 240mm.Have you thought about a 1jz with r154 box they can be got for about a £1000 for both .It will take a bit of fabrication to fit it but its a good strong engine many drift guys use this set up even in nissan drift cars.
