Car drove fine with no problems only last weekend. Drove up from London to Stoke last night and performance was fine...was only when I pulled into some services and it got quieter that I noticed there was quite a loud clicking/tapping noise coming from the engine. Seems to get louder and faster with revs.

Can't think what it might be and as I said, performance doesn't seem to have been affected but very disconcerting, especially as I have to drive all the way back down to London tomorrow!

Any ideas as to what it might be?? I did poke my head in the bay but can't figure out exactly where it's coming from. Almost sounds like when my AC compressor went but I know it's not that as AC/fan wasn't on when I hear the noise.

Just thinking whether to take it to a garage around here in stoke but then don't want some cowboy having at it either!

Help anyone? Cheers!

Sounds like a sticky hydraulic lifter matey. Is the noise coming from the top of the engine?

It does sound like its near the top of the engine yes. Once I knew it was there I could hear it inside the cabin like it was coming from behind the centre console.

Big fix? Easy fix? Issue driving with it??

You can try some lifter treatment with an oil change go for a 10w/40 at least that may help.... and take it for a good long run

Ok, not done anything like this before - easy to do or best to take it to a garage?

Cheers

Pour the lifter treatment in the oil filler, really easy. If its not lifters, it could be a variable valve timing spring, they cause a ticking, rattling sound. Mine has been doing this for months, its not going to go bang, just annoying lol.

If you are in Stoke (on Trent?) get down to Jeff's near Birmingham, probably need to be monday now, unless youre heading home.

Your pod should be waiting for you at home, by the way

Can be purchased from any major autocar parts shop (Halfords)

yes the oil change is an easy task filter is not in to ackward of a position but a garage would prob only charge you a mere £20.00/25.00 for an oil change get the nissan filter or a wix one and you will have a copper washer to that lurks behind the sump nut these are only supposed to be re-used a few times

the lifter treatment can be sourced from e bay or the like and should show from a search for lifter treatment or hydraulic liffter treatment

Ah fair enough. Thanks for the info. I assume it's ok to drive though for now? Just want to make sure its safe to drive back to London tomorrow!

Why not ssee if you can pop into Jeff's on your journey back, sure he'd know what it was ;)

would not want to say really im no mechanic, only giving you an avenue to explore, as vijay says maybe speak to jeff and see if you can get it to him to have a look at

it does sound like a lifter from what you have said therefore my suggestion is certainly worth a try but then again it may be something else!

hope you get it sorted

have you checked the oil level . if its low and needs topping up rattles appear .

About to go and do some other bits on the car so will do so now. Got in late last night and up late this morning so first chance to take a good look now...

Maybe an idea to post up a video of the engine/noise - may help

I stuck some oil in it as levels were a bit low...seems to have cured most of the noise but there's still some lurking there somehwere. Took a video which I'll post up soon as I can!

It will still work with the series 1 ecu, but you wont get the direction or temp readout lol.

Its a bit of a pig to get to cos of the angle, the top left one is the hardest, infact when i changed mine i didnt bother putting it back in, I might have even snapped the bracket lug to get it out, cant remember, so long ago.

Hi mate I live in stoke if u want to pop round before u go u r more than welcome? I can hav a look for u let u no the problem??

HI mate, thanks for the offer but it's my mum's bday today, hence why I came up, and I also need to head back to London early arvo do aside from the few spare moments I'll have to nip into the garage I don't think I'll have enough time to head out anywhere.

I have a taken a vid though so will post that up soon and hopefully go from there...

Cheers
